10 Things That have Changed Since You Were A Kid??
created by

Today I got to spend some time with my childhood best friend, we've been
best friends 16 years now and we always talk about &back in the day&...lol
This brought up the topic of things that have changed since we were kids
compared to now... And made me want to hear from all of you...??
So, Can you name 10 things that have changed since you were a kid? Do
you have friends you can share childhood memories with??
How long is the longest friendship you've had? Do you feel you grew
closer as y'all got older, or that the friendship changed as you both
got older??
Want to wish you all the best of luck in each election here and I look
forward to hearing some interesting answers from all of you :)
The longest friendship I have had is as old as I am, so 19 1/2 years
old. She and I lived right next to each other when I lived in Florida
and always hung out together. Our dads were really good friends as well
and our moms were best friends. Even though I now live in Washington and
her family still lives in Florida, her grandparents live about 30
minutes away from us, so we still see them about once a year. Our
friendship has definitely changed, not only because of our ages but also
because of the distance.
I have some friends I still share childhood memories with, and some new
friends that I compare childhood memories with which is just as fun!
10 things that have changed since my childhood:
1) The decade
2) The fashion
3) The state I live in: Florida --& Washington
4) What I wanted to do when I grew up: Shopkeeper --& Archaeologist
(big change!)
5) Cartoons. Man, CyberChase and Zaboomafoo used to be the best shows
ever and I can't find them anymore!
6) Airports. I remember the first time I had to go through metal
detectors in security after 9/11.
7) The boys I used to have a crush on. It is really interesting to see
them now...
8) Cellphones and the age of the people who have them!
9) My personal strength, independence, and individualism
10) The person I want to become
And with that last cryptic answer, I leave you. :)
Great forum!
I am older than most of the people on here. I know not all... but still
I am still a kid (at least at heart) but the things that have changed
since I was 10ish (good round number)
The only order this is in... the order that it popped into my head
1) we delivered papers using our bikes, and using big huge bags that
went over our heads (I helped my best friend with her route, and she and
I still chat) next door neighbor still has a
2) I drank water out of the hose and played in the sprinklers (children
or small adults still do that across the street... I do not think that
the family has a Play station or anything such as that though. I see
those kids play... it is a blast to watch... and remember)
3) Fashion.. (although it has come back, and gone away again)
4) prices have gone up (I remember buying a pack of gum with a
quarter--5 glorious sticks)
5) the internet (was not around... ) laptops were not much either
6) Cell Phones (My dad had one of those bricks, that was the size of a
brick) Plus... he did not have one until I was 13ish
7) Hairstyles (like fashion is came and went and back)
8) Music -- 'nuff said
9) Cartoons (I loved Peanuts--duh! and Tom and Jerry... what happened to
Tom and Jerry?)
10) awareness... people lock their doors now,and when I was young, I was
able to walk through a friends door, and walk around the house calling
out Mom (I called my best friend's mother mom)
Hey Nichole!
It's so great catching up with old friends. My friends Sancheen and I
met in the sixth grade. And we are still friends twenty years later.
She's really the only childhood friend that I keep in regular contact
with. We try to see each other at least twice a year.
It's great that
our husbands have become good friends as well.
We really enjoy the
times we get to spend together.
I sure do miss her!!
I remember being in elementary school and going home after school
with no parents. Yeah my brother was there, but he was only two years
older than me.
I'm sure we were home alone around the ages of 6/8 or
I don't think I will be ready for my daughter to be home alone
until she is at least 12, but only time will tell.
Reality TV.
I'm not even sure if I remember any reality tv shows
when I was growing up.
I do remember 90210 and Melrose Place when I was
a teenager.
Recycling and Earth preservation. In the 80s, it was probably not
even a concern.
4. Smoking..so much has changed in how our society accepts and deals
with smokers. It really wasn't even that long ago that restaurants had a
smoking and non smoking section. I can't wait until people stop smoking.
Like that will ever happen, but I can dream.
My parents are divorced. Not too many parents get divorced after 36
years of marriage. But it really was the best thing my mom could have
ever done. I am so glad that my mom lives near me now.
Everything is digital and easily accessible at the touch of a
finger. Information is available at anytime, anywhere. The internet has
evolved and became such a prized possession of the world.
Paper money...it's hard to believe that it barely even exists. I
know it exists, but debit cards and credit cards are prevalent. Even
check books have become a thing of the past.
VHS players, I'm not sure I even know anyone that still uses VHS
tapes. When I see people trying to sell VHS movies I laugh, people
should be giving those things away for free at this point :)
I think the trust of the government has gone down the drain. I
think in the 80s and 90s, people had more confidence in the leaders if
our country.
Video games and consoles. I don't think there were so many violent
video games. And now you can use a game console for so many
things...ours is a DVD player, we can access pandora, Netflix, Amazon
Prime and YouTube all from our XBox.
Now I feel a little bit dated :)
It&s funny how much can change in what seems like such a short
amount of time. I mean, I&m only 19, which is fairly young
compared to many other Collegenetters, but I have been through so much
in my lifetime and so much has changed.
Because my family and I moved so much until just recently, I never
really had a solid period of time that I was able to just settle down
and make friends that I would become close enough to stay in touch with
after moving again. And even the ones I did keep in touch with&
Well that all just kind of faded out. It can be really hard to keep that
contact going, you know? Especially when there are so many people I know
and many friends I&ve made with time! Sometimes (This is going to
sound selfish of me), but sometimes, I just don&t have the energy
Anyhow&. Ten things that have changed since I was a kid. (Even
though some people still consider me a kid, haha! I assure you, I am a
legal adult, and usually a responsible adult as well.)
1. Responsibilities&. Obviously. I think we all know this,
it&s kind of a given.
2. Technology and the internet. I may not be that old, but I remember
when we only had dial-up&. Ouch. And I also remember my
mom&s old OLD phone. Man, that thing was a tank. Kind of like
something from a silly parody. It even had this extra-long extendable
antenna, haha!
3. My confidence in being on the phone versus texting, hmmm&
4. What I believe in, how I perceive myself and what I want to become.
5. Gas prices! Man, I remember when they were just hitting $2! And we
all thought that was a big deal!
6. Music videos& Really pop culture in general actually.
7. Pluto isn&t even a planet anymore&. What!?
8. Blockbuster. I remember when DVDs started replacing VHS, I remember
the day we switched over very well actually.
9. Jellies. Remember those shoes?
10. Also Tamagotchis&. Did anyone else have a
&phase&? Also&. I still have one (Non-functional,
haha), on my key-chain. Sometimes you just can&t let go&.
The longest friendship I have had is ten years (and still strong). Our
relationship has changed over the years but in a becoming closer or
drifting apart sort of way. We became friends in middle school so our
relationship back then was more superficial but as we grew older we
realized more of the similarities we shared and our discussions and
activities became more meaningful.
Ten things that have changed since I was a kid:
1. We listened to cassettes on Walkmen instead of music on iPods or
2. All cell phones were basic phones, some without even a color screen.
3. All schoolwork had to be written by hand, typing an assignment was
considered taking a shortcut. Now teachers actually prefer typed
assignments.
4. Laptops and other electronics were not allowed in school. Now they
are incorporated into the classroom in many schools.
5. No more limited international calls because of the expense.
6. There was no social media.
7. We were allowed to bring unlimited liquids on airplanes.
8. TV had to be watched on a TV (not a computer).
9. Dialup Internet.
1. Disney shows
2. My responsibilities
4. My parents
5. Relationships
6. My world views.
7. My favorite color.
8. My favorite fruit.
9. I think I missed the point of this
10. Basically everything, I do not shit myself anymore so that's good.
Hi again Nichole!
1. We were allowed to play outside all afternoon without our parents
really keeping an eye on us. that was from 5 yrs old on.
2. There were no remote controls fo the youngest
sibling usually got bossed around to change the channels for you.
3. There were no computers or even small calculators around. You had to
do math in your head and remember all sorts of things.
4. Everyone memorized dozens of phone numbers all the time.
5. We played ball a lot outside.
6. Women wore skirts almost all the time. Girls did too when they
weren't playing outside.
Pizza and a soda cost 75 cents. A gallon of gas was also 75 cents.
8. DNA and genetically modified foods were phrases never used.
9. We could walk to the corner candy store and buy penny candy.
10. I wore an Easter bonnet every year until I was about 10 and I protested.
I don't have any friends from my early years but it is cool to remember
some things.
Thank you all for your responses so far :)
I am definitely looking forward to reading through your feedback and
will respond to you all individually, but wanted to give my answers
first. I also wish you all the best of luck in the election ending
today, as well as every election to come :)
1. The way kids play - when I was a kid we were always outside roller
skating, riding bikes, jumping rope, etc. Now I barely see kids outside,
especially with adult supervision!! Not to mention mud pies or playing
in the rain.
2. VHS movies versus blue ray or dvd.
3. Box TV's, versus flat screen and TV's hanging on walls...lol
4. Jobs were not so scarce and I do not remember so many people being
out of work and/or struggling
5. Back then, we all respected our elders. Now days kids are cursing and
being disrespectful at younger and younger ages...
6. I also remember pagers being popular, now we've advanced all the way
passed pagers (these are a thing of the past - unless you're a doctor or
something). We now have Smartphones that do more than we could have
really imagined being practical 15 or more years ago...
7. Big tracphones and other prepaid phones, when there was not so many
phone companies as there is now - you only had a few options.
8. I had a Walkman with a radio on it, years later a portable cd player
- & with both of these regular headphones, no wireless or Bluetooth
options - or anything of that nature.
9. Since I was a kid, of course everything in my life has changed
becoming an adult - bills, stress, doing it all on my own, college,
driving, etc. This is a given, but now I face so many health issues,
& can't help but to remember being a kid and not dealing with all of
these health problems & never even considering me having Parry
Romberg Syndrome & have such effects from it.
10. College was not looked at as something that you had to be in debt
for or something you had to pay an arm & a leg for. Scholarships
were looked at as being more available, etc. I feel college was looked
at as being &more possible& back then, versus how we all are
so stressed fighting for scholarships, grants, anything that will help
pay our tuition. I never imagined taking online college course from
home, it was looked at as being on campus only.
Good Luck again to you all in all that life throws your way & all
you set out to accomplish and each election here :)
Hope to hear from more of you..
A lot has changed!
I'm not as
close to my bets friends.lit seems like elementary, middle,
and high school keeps us close...now that we're adults living our life,
we have no time for one another.
- fights with my cousins
- my parents doing a lot for me...food,
buying clothes, laundry
-financial realization of being an adult!
- not hiding from my crushes
-staying up late
-being independent
-hanging out with family and friends on my own!
I think my list will focus on cell phones.
First: Cell phones: they
I remember when I was a kid I got my own land line phone in my
room and it was the most amazing thing that ever happened to me. It
might have been a bigger deal than when I got my drivers license.
I think the biggest problem with cell phones is that there was not an
older generation teaching a younger generation cell phone etiquette.
no one was taught, how can they then teach their children.
Politeness
is passed on generation to generation.
I feel like that is why, today,
when I am working as a waitress, so many people do not even look up from
their phones to talk to me.
Some don't even put it down if talking,
they simply move it under their chin and give me their order. Really
people, this is not acceptable behavior.
Interact with the world, not
with your Angry Birds ap.
http://youtu.be/Z7dLU6fk9QY
this is in reference to my above post.
you have never see the &Look up& video, it will change the way
you look at your cell phone.
One of my best friends since basically birth moved to Georgia about 2
years ago and it was probably one of the hardest things ever.
the last of my childhood friends in my neighborhood so now I feel so
We would walk over to each other's houses randomly to hang out
and it was so much fun.
I feel like we aren't as close now but every
time we see each other it's like nothing has changed, so I guess that's
I also had a couple other close childhood friends who moved
away in middle school and it's really hard not to have anyone to call up
and hang out with whenever I'm bored.
Anyways, here's 10 things that I've noticed have changed since I was a kid:
1. Kids hardly play outside anymore.
When I was little that's all we
wanted to do was ride our scooters and bikes and go to the park with our
friends and enjoy the nice weather.
It's really sad to see kids
nowadays just sitting inside playing video games.
2. The clothing.
Looking back at baby pictures I wore the most
ridiculous things, but now it seems like middle schoolers are trying to
fit in with teen/adult fashion and some of it just isn't appropriate for
3. Cell phones.
It's like socializing doesn't exist anymore.
4. What I want to study in college definitely changed a lot.
5. Trying to play VHS is really difficult considering mine is broken and
they don't sell VHS players anymore.
6. My first phone was a flip phone half the size of my iPhone now lol
7. Doing fun holiday projects in school where now we hardly even put up
decorations at school.
8. Getting done with homework an hour after school and now I'm
struggling to be done by 10.
9. More freedom!
Perks of being able to drive :)
10. Gameboys.
Does anyone even have one anymore?
1. Personality (from being the one of the loudest kids during elementary
school to being the most quiet person you'll ever meet, but I'm a
cheerleader so I guess that's kinda weird xD)
2. My eyebrows!!!!!
3. My patience (got worst)
4. Feeling towards SLEEP ( hated sleeping when I was little. I love
sleep more and more everyday)
5. My visions ( I literally can't see anymore it sucks)
6. Thoughts about muscles ( I use to think muscular guys are so gross.)
7. Eating habits ( my parents use to literally have to force me to eat,
now I LOVE food!)
8. Hand writing ( I even get surprised now how much my handwriting
changes in a year, I wonder how my hand writing use to be?)
9. Taste in movies ( I use to hate hate scary movies, now I love a good scare!)
10. Fashion Style ( I loved skirts and dresses as a little girl, now I'm
more like tank tops and jeans.)小题1:C小题2:B小题3:D小题4:A略

DEight-year-old Bethany and seven-year-old Eliza are having a great time jumping around in the orchard of their home in a village near Penrith. They can play any time they like because they don't go to school. Instead, they are educated at home by their parents, Paul and Veronika Robinson. But they don't have lessons, have never used a timetable and learn only what and when they want to learn. "I want my kids to have freedom in their childhood, not spend it in an institution," says 37-year-old Veronika, "School is all about control and following the rules." Veronika and her 56-year-old husband Paul have never experienced the daily rush to get dressed and out of the door that is common in most households with school-aged children. "We get up at our leisure - usually around 8:30," says Veronika. "We might visit a friend, or go to the library, and on Tuesdays we shop at the market. In summer, we spend most of our time outside and the girls entertain themselves a lot." New research due to be published this spring reveals a very different picture of Britain's home educators. "Out of 297 families, 184 said that they never use a timetable," says Mike Fortune-Wood of Home Education UK. "Ninety per cent never or rarely use textbooks, and nearly all said that happiness, contentment and self-fulfillment were more important than academic achievement. Only 15% felt that planning what to learn was crucial." So far, so good. But what, you might ask, are the children actually learning? "It wasn't important to me that the girls could read by a certain age, but they both picked it up for themselves at around seven," says Robinson. "Weighing cooking ingredients uses maths, and making a shopping list teaches them to write. Observing five hens has taught the girls about survival of the fittest. " But what about when the children grow up? Can they go to university? The home educators' answer is they can if they want to. There are a variety of routes into higher education, but probably the most common is to join a local college. This is what Gus Harris-Reid has done. "I was educated at home all my life. I'd never had a lesson or been inside a classroom until I started GCSEs," says the 18-year-old. "I'm now studying for 4 A-levels at Exeter College. I've had no problem with the work or with fitting in." When asked to reflect on his experience of home education, his considered response is, "Like a permanent holiday, really!" Not a bad start for someone who plans to take a mechanical engineering degree next year. 66. What is the topic of this article? A. New ways of learning to read and write&&&&&&&&&& B. Problems with UK schoolsC. Home education in the UK&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& D. Wild, undisciplined children67. Why do the Robinsons not send their children to school?A. They think schools control children too much. B. They do not like the courses taught in schools. C. They want to teach their children farming skills. D. They live in a remote area where there are no schools.68. According to the article, in homes with school-going children, ______. A. mornings are rushed and stressful.&&&B. the children hardly ever go outside.C. the family wakes up around 8:30am. D. the children must ask permission to go to the toilet.69. Which of the following statements is NOT true?A. Most home educators believe that happiness is more important than good grades. B. Most home educators believe that planning is important.C. Most home educators do not follow a timetable or use textbooks. D. Most home educators are not worried about when their children learn to read and write.70. What does the article say about home-educated children getting into university?A. They learn so many useful skills at home that universities are happy to accept them.B. They can get into university if they have 4 A-levels. C. They can go to school later and get the qualifications they need in order to enter university.D. Home education is so relaxed that they are likely to experience problems when faced with the pressures of a degree course.

Every couple of minutes a billboard glides by outside the bus window. “Buy Super Clean Toothpaste.” “Drink Good’n Wet Root Beer.” “Fill up with Pacific Gas.” Only if you sleep, which is equal to turning the television set off, are you spared the unending cry of “You Need It! Buy It Now!”The beginning of the ride is comfortable and somewhat exciting, even if you’ve traveled that way before. Usually some things have changed-new houses, new buildings, sometimes even a new road. The bus driver has a style of driving and it’s fun to try to figure it out the first hour or so. If the driver is particularly reckless(不计后果的) or daring, the ride can be as thrilling as a suspense story. Will the driver pass the truck in time? Will the driver move into the right or the left-hand lane? After a while, of course, the excitement dies down. Sleeping for a while helps pass the middle hours of the ride. Food always makes bus rides more interesting. But you’ve got to be careful of what kind of food you eat. Too much salty food can make you very thirsty between stops. The end of the ride is somewhat like the beginning. You know it will soon be over and there’s a kind of expectation and excitement in that. The seat, of course, has become harder as the hours have passed. By now you’ve sat with you legs crossed, with your hands in your lap, with your hands on the am rests---even with your hands crossed behind your head. The end comes just at the right time. There are just no more ways to sit.61. According to the passage, what do the passengers usually see when they are on a long bus trip? A.buses on the road. && B.films on television. DWives, children and parents left behind in the countryside by migrant workers need special assistance, a member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference said yesterday. Adult males moving to work in cities, is causing a challenge to the traditional function of bringing up children and supporting the elderly, said Shen Shuji, who is also an official with the All-China Women’s Federation. Shen recommended certain measures, including a special policy to guarantee educational opportunities for such children, accelerating (加速) the establishment of pension (养老金) and medical care systems in rural areas, and encouraging enterprises and non-governmental organizations to help such families. The rights and welfare of migrant workers themselves have called much attention in recent years. The government has made policies to protect their rights. The number of children aged between 6 and 16 in this situation is more than 20 million nationwide, accounting for more than half of the country’s total. Some of the children have both their parents in cities and have to be taken care of by grandparents or other family relatives. Without enough care from parents, many of them become problem children, Shen said. Wives left at home by their husband have to face hard work, loneliness and a lack of a sense of security. In many cases long-term separation ends up with divorce. There is still no pension system in China’s countryside. Traditionally, the elderly in rural areas are supported by their children with low incomes. But the exodus of their children has left many old people in a difficult situation. They have to continue to work in farms while taking care of their grandchildren, Shen said. The country should gradually scrap (消除) the decades-old bi-polar system separating rural and urban areas, which prevent farmers from enjoying the equal rights.&&53.What is the key to solving the problem that wives, children and parents are left behind in the countryside? A.Migrant workers should have a higher pay. B.More profitable policies for migrant workers should be carried out. C.The government should try to make the countryside catch up with the city. D.Everyone should give his hand to help migrant workers.54.We can infer from the passage that ______. A.enough efforts have been made to improve the situation in the countryside. B.families in the countryside are often very large. C.all the children can go to school before long. D.there is a long way to go before solving the problem55.Which of the following is NOT the problem of adult males moving to work in cities according to the passage?
