If using this method to simulate multibody dynamics, the global dynamical equations need not be developed, and such characteristics as lower order of global system matrix, fast computation speed, flexible modeling can also be obtained. To improve the numerical stability of MS-DT-TMM, in this investigation, MS-DT-TMM and Riccati transform are combined. Then a new method is formed, namely Riccati MS-DT-TMM. So boundary value problem of space transformation in MS-DT-TMM becomes the original value problem in Riccati MS-DT-TMM and the order of matrix can be reduced again. To shorten the computational time again, the intermediate variables of Riccati transfer matrix method used in vibration mechanics are improved without changing calculation precision and memory storage. Compared with MS-DT-TMM, if using the proposed method, the numerical stability not only in space field but also in time field can be improved and the CPU time can be economized synchronously. The numerical example of one hundred thousand degree of freedom system to validate the method has been given. It can show that the proposed method is a powerful tool for engineering application in multibody system dynamics field. In this investigation, rectangular thin plates with loaded edges simply supported can be discretized by semi-analytical finite strip technology. Then the control equations of the strip elements of the buckling plate will be rewritten as the transfer equations by transfer matrix method. A new approach, namely semi-analytical Finite Strip Transfer Matrix Method, is developed for the buckling analysis of plates. This method requires no global stiffness matrix of the system, reduces the system matrix order, and improves the computational efficiency. Comparing with some theoretical results and FEM’s results of two illustrations (the plates and the ribbed plates) under six boundary conditions, the method is proved to be reliable and effective. The columns under consideration were made with the autoclaving technique of eight layers of a glass fibre reinforced polymer unidirectional prepreg tape. Six different arrangements of layers were taken into account. The following experimental data were collected: force–displacement relations obtained from a Zwick/Roel universal testing machine, strains at chosen points of the tube measured with a strain gauge technique, a map of deflections obtained with a non-contact 3D optical method (Aramis System, made by GOM company). All those results were used to determine buckling load and equilibrium paths in the pre-and post-buckling range. A numerical model of the analysed tube was prepared with the ANSYS software. A linear and nonlinear buckling analysis was performed. The experimental results were used to validate the proposed FEM model. An influence of the layer arrangement on the buckling and post-buckling behaviour, differences between the numerical and experimental results and the methods employed for buckling load determination are discussed.Article · Nov 2015 ABSTRACT: Because of non-ductile nature of buckling mode of failure, web-post failure examination of castellated steel beams is considered a critical issue in designing. A detailed numerical study is performed on the shear response of castellated steel beams, susceptible to web-post buckling in this article. The accuracy of the previously proposed formulation is evaluated for the mild steel models and it is found that the available methods fail to accurately predict the web-post buckling load for these beams. A considerable number of finite element (FE) models of mild steel castellated beams, are analyzed and added to the previously developed data bank. Based on these data, consisting of 300 models, a modified formulation is proposed to estimate the critical buckling load of castellated beams, considering material type. A case study analysis of a damaged castellated beam revealed some important factors for a safer design of these beams.Article · Jun 2015 ABSTRACT: The aim of this paper is to develop a finite element method to approximate the buckling problem of simply supported Kirchhoff plates subjected to general plane stress tensor. We introduce an auxiliary variable (with representing the displacement of the plate) to write a variational formulation of the spectral problem. We propose a conforming discretization of the problem, where the unknowns are approximated by piecewise linear and continuous finite elements. We show that the resulting scheme provides a correct approximation of the spectrum and prove optimal order error estimates for the eigenfunctions and a double order for the eigenvalues. Finally, we present some numerical experiments supporting our theoretical results.Article · Oct 2015 ABSTRACT: The objective of this paper is to provide a method for applying modal identification (i.e. the separation of general deformations into fundamental modal deformation classes: local, distortional, global, shear, and transverse extension) to the collapse analysis of thin-walled members modeled using material and geometric nonlinear shell finite element analysis. The advantage of such a modal identification is the ability to categorize and reduce the complicated deformations that occur in a shell finite element model—and ultimately to (a) quantitatively associate failures with particular classes, e.g. state a model as a local failure, and (b) track the evolution of the classes, e.g., mixed local and distortional buckling leading to a distortional failure in a given model. Ultimately, this capability will aid Specification development, which must simplify complicated behavior down to strength predictions in isolated buckling-induced limit states. The modal identification method is enabled by creating a series of base vectors, consistent with the fundamental deformation classes, that are used to categorize the general finite element displacements. The base vectors are constructed using the constrained finite strip method for general end boundary conditions, previously developed by the authors. A fairly sizeable minimization problem is required for assigning the contributions to the fundamental deformation classes. The procedure is illustrated with shell finite element examples of cold-formed steel members modeled to collapse with geometric or/and material nonlinearity. The failure modes of the member are tracked (i.e., identified as a function of displacement), and the collapse mechanism is investigated. The provided examples provide both proof of concept for the modal identification and demonstrate the potential of using such information to better understand the behavior of thin-walled members.Article · Jun 2013

Advances in mechanical engineering
