英国作家斯蒂尔曾说:“Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.”(读书之于心灵,犹如锻炼之于身体)。 同时,pose还能组成 pose a threat/ a challenge之类的短语. 例如,与疾病有关的词、短语: be infectious, be infected with, be contagious, be immune from, be liable to, be susceptible to...; 以 to 结尾的短语:be immune to, be exposed to, be vulnerable to...; 以 of 结尾的短语: convince...of, suspect...of, inform...of, remind...of, deprive...of, rob...of, absolve...of, acquit...of, convict...of, accuse...of, expect...of等等. 如果我们了解 Augean stable, Damocles 这些西方文化传说,那么就不难理解 clean one's own Augean stable(清除污垢,消除腐败等),the sword of Damocles hanging over somebody(危在旦夕)这些短语的意思了.钱钟书先生曾说:东海西海,心理攸同;南学北学,道术未裂. 东西文化中有许多相似之处,这就构建了我们理解西方文化的心理基础.例如:中英文都有空中楼阁(castles in the air)、火上加油(add fuel to the flames)、滴水穿石(constant dropping wears the stone)、笑柄(laughing stock)之说.但是东西方文化除了共***以外,还存在许多差异***.有时我们尚能找到相对应的表达 (equivalents).例如: 大海捞针find the needle in the haystack 一箭双雕killing two birds with one stone 毛骨悚然make one's hair stand on end 但有时却会因文化差异而产生歧义.试解读She was the last straw.这一句.中国文化中有救命稻草之说,西方文化中的 the last straw并非救命稻草,而是再也无法忍受之人或物.可见正确的理解必须有文化背景的支撑,词汇的积累当然离不开文化背景,这正是我们在积累词汇的过程中应牢记的.
