People in the United States honor their parents with two special days: Mother’s Day, on the second Sunday in May, and Father’s Day, on the third Sunday in June.Mother’s Day was proclaimed a day for national observance by President Woodrow Wilson in 1915. Ann Jarvis from Grafton, West Virginia, had started the idea to have a day to honor mothers. She was the one who chose the second Sunday in May and also began the custom of wearing a carnation. In 1909, Mrs. Dodd from Spokane, Washington, thought of the idea of a day to honor fathers. She wanted to honor her own father, William Smart. After her mother died, he had the responsibility of raising a family of five sons and a daughter. In 1910, the first Father’s Day was observed in Spokane. Senator Margaret Chase Smith helped to establish Father’s Day as a national commemorative day in 1972.These days are set aside to show love and respect for parents. They raise their children and educate them to be responsible citizens. They give love and care. These two special days are celebrated in many different ways. On Mother’s Day people wear carnations. Humans are naturally drawn to other life forms and the worlds outside of our own. We take delight in the existence of creatures and even whole societies beyond our everyday lives. This sense of wonder is universal. Look at the efforts that scientists have made to find out whether life of some kind exists on Mars, and the popularity of fantasy literature or movies like The Lord of the Rings. This sense of wonder draws us to each other, to the world around us, and to the world of make-believe. But have we gone so far in creating worlds of fantasy that we are missing the pleasure of other worlds that already exist all around us?Human beings, as biologists have suggested, possess an inborn desire to connect with and understand other life forms. However, people, especially in big cities, often lead rather isolated lives. In a study of British schoolchildren, it was found that children by age eight were much more familiar with characters from television shows and video games than with common wildlife. Without modem technology, a small pond could be an amazing world filled with strange and beautiful plants, insects, birds, and animals. When we lack meaningful interaction(交互) with the world around us, and sometimes even with our families and friends, we seek to understand and communicate with things that exist only in our imaginations or on a computer screen。The world of make-believe is not necessarily bad. But when the world of fantasy becomes the only outlet(出路) for our sense of wonder, then we are really missing something. We are missing a connection with the living world. Other wonderful worlds exist all around us. But even more interesting is that if we look closely enough, we can see that these worlds, in a broad sense, are really part of our own.小题1:The popularity of The Lord of the Rings proves &&&&A.the close connection between man and the fantasy worldB.the wonderful achievements of fantasy literatureC.the fine taste of moviegoers around the worldD.the general existence of the sense of curiosity小题2:What can we infer from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3?A.People are far less familiar with the world of fantasy.B.The world around us could serve as a source of wonder.C.The world of fantasy can be mirrored by a small and lively pond.D.Modern technology prevents us from developing our sense of wonder.小题3: If our sense of wonder relies totally on the world of make-believe, we will &&&&A.fail to appreciate the joy in our livesB.be confused by the world of make-believeC.miss the chance to recognize the fantasy worldD.be trapped by other worlds existing all around us小题4: What is the main purpose of the passage?A.To show us the hidden beauty in our world.B.To warn us not to get lost in the fantasy world.C.To argue against the misuse of the sense of wonder.D.To discuss the influence of the world of make-believe.

Visitors to Britain may find the best place to sample local culture is in a traditional pub. But these friendly pubs can be dangerous places of potential gaffes (失礼) for the newcomers. A team of researchers have discovered some of the unknown customs of British pubs-starting with the difficulty of getting a drink. Most pubs have no waiters-you have to go to the bar to buy drinks. A group of Italian youths waiting 45 minutes before they realized they would have to fetch their own. This may sound inconvenient, but there is a hidden purpose.Pub culture is designed to promote sociability (社交) in a society known for its reserve. Standing at the bar for service allows you to chat with others waiting to be served. The bar counter is possibly the only site in the British Isles in which friendly conversation with strangers is considered entirely suitable and really quite normal behavior. “If you haven't been to a pub, you haven't been to Britain.” This tip can be found in a booklet, Passport to the Pub: The Tourists' Guide to Pub Etiquette, a customers' rule of conduct for those wanting to sample “a central part of British life and culture”.The trouble is that if you do not follow the local rules, the experience may fall flat. For example, if you are in a big group, it is best if only one or two people go to buy the drinks. Nothing annoys the regular customers and bar staff more than a group of strangers blocking all access to the bar while they chat and hesitate about what to order. 小题1: The underlined word “sample” in the first paragraph probably means “________”. Flight DistanceAny observant people have noticed that a wild animal will allow a man or other potential enemy to approach only up to a given distance before it escapes. “Flight distance” is the terms used for this interspecies spacing. As a general rule, there is a positive relationship between the size of an animal and its flight distance --- the larger the animal, the greater the distance it must keep between itself and the enemy. An antelope will escape when the enemy is as much as five hundred yards away. The wall lizard’s flight distance, on the other hand, is about six feet. Flight is the basic means of survival for mobile creatures.Critical Distance Critical distance apparently is present wherever and whenever there is a flight reaction. “Critical distance” includes the narrow zone separating flight distance from attack distance. A lion in a zoo will flee from an approaching man until it meets a barrier that it cannot overcome. If the man continues the approach, he soon penetrates(穿过,透过)the lion’s critical distance, at which point the cornered lion turns back and begins slowly stalk(逼近)the man.Social Distance Social animals need to stay in touch with each other. Loss of contact with the group can be fatal (致命的)for a variety of reasons including exposure to enemies. Social distance is not simply the distance at which an animal will lose contact with his group --- that is, the distance at which it can no longer see, hear, or smell the group --- it is rather a psychological distance, one at which the animal apparently begins to feel anxious when it goes beyond its limits. We can think of it as a hidden band that contains the group. Social distance varies from species to species. It is quite short --- apparently only a few yards --- among some animals, and quite long among others. Social distance is not always rigidly(刻板的)fixed but is determined in part by the situation. When the young of apes and humans are mobile but not yet under control of the mother’s voice, social distance may be the length of her reach. This is readily observed among baboons(狒狒)in a zoo. When the baby approaches a certain point, the mother reaches out to seize the end of its tail and pull it back to her. When added control is needed because of danger, social distance shortens. To show this in man, one has only to watch a family with a number of small children holding hands as they cross a busy street.小题1:Which of the following is the most suitable explanation to “Flight distance”?A.Distance between animals of the same species before escaping.B.Distance between large and small animals before escaping.C.Distance between an animal and its enemy before escaping D.Distance between certain animal species before escaping.小题2:If a lion’s critical distance is penetrated, it will ________A.begin to attackB.try to hideC.begin to jumpD.run away小题3:The example of the children holding hands when crossing the street in the last paragraph shows that ________.A.social distance is not always neededB.there is no social distance among childrenC.humans are different from animals in social distanceD.social distance is sometimes determined by outside factors小题4:Which of the following one can be the best title of the passage?A.Critical DistanceB.Spacing in AnimalsC.Relationship Between AnimalsD.Psychological Distance

Everybody hates it, but everybody does it. A recent report said that 40%of Americans hate tipping. In America alone, tipping is a $16 billion-a-year industry. Consumers acting politely ought not to pay more than they have to for a given service. Tips should not exist. So why do they? The common opinion in the past was that tips both rewarded the efforts of good service and reduced uncomfortable feelings of inequality. And also, tipping makes for closer relations. It went without saying that the better the service, the bigger the tip. But according to new research from Cornell University, tips no longer serve any useful function. The paper analyzes numbers they got from 2,547 groups dining at 20 different restaurants. The connection between larger tips and better service was very weak. Only a tiny part of the size of the tip had anything to do with the quality of service. Tipping is better explained, by culture than by the money people spend. In America, the custom came into being a long time ago. It is regarded as part of the accepted cost of a service. In New York restaurants, failing to tip at least l5% could well mean dissatisfaction from the customers. Hairdressers can expect to get l5%-20%, and the man who delivers your fast food $2. In Europe, tipping is less common. In many restaurants the amount of tip is decided by a standard service charge. In many Asian countries, tipping has never really caught on at all. Only a few have really taken to tipping.According to Michael Lynn, the Cornell papers’ author, countries in which people are more social or outgoing tend to tip more. Tipping may reduce anxiety about being served by strangers. And Mr. Lynn says, “In America, where people are expressive and eager to mix up with others, tipping is about social approval. If you tip badly, people think less of you. Tipping well is a chance to show off.”小题1:This passage is mainly about________.A.different kinds of tipping in different countriesB.the relationship between tipping and customC.the origin and present meaning of tippingD.most American people hate tipping小题2:Which of the following best explains the underlined phrase “caught on” ?A.Been hated.B.Become popular.C.Been stopped.D.Been permitted小题3:Among the following situations, in your opinion, who is likely to tip most?A.A Frenchman just quarreled with the barber who did his hair badly in New York.B.A Chinese student enjoyed his meal in a famous fast food restaurant in New York.C.A Japanese businessman asked for a pizza delivery from a Pizza Hut in New York.D.An American just had a wonderful dinner in a well known restaurant in New York.小题4:We can infer from this passage that________.A.tipping is no longer a good way to satisfy some customers themselvesB.tipping has something to do with people’s characterC.tipping in America can make service better nowD.tipping is especially popular in New York

One of the most famous buildings in the United States is Carnegie Hall, the home of classical and popular music concerts in New York. Carnegie Hall is known not just for its beauty and history, but also for its amazing sound. It has been said that the hall itself is an instrument. It takes the music and makes it larger than life. Carnegie Hall is named after Andrew Carnegie, who paid for its construction. He was a wealthy man who also gave a lot of money to schools and public libraries. Construction on Carnegie Hall began in 1890 and the official opening night was on May 5, 1891.The hall was owned by the Carnegie family until 1924 when it was sold to Robert E. Simon. Isaac Stem led a group of people who fought to save Carnegie Hall and finally, the city of New York bought it for $5 million.
