&&&&　　在图书出版过程中，由某一集中编目机构或某个图书馆的编目部门根据出版机构提供的书稿清样进行的文献编目工作。编目数据一般印在即将出版的图书的特定位置(书名页背面或版权页)，以供各图书馆及其他文献工作机构用以编制各种目录。　　　　随着图书出版量的急剧增长，为了快速、及时地进行编目加工和报道，避免各馆单独编目所造成的重复性劳动与人力浪费，弥补现行集中编目卡片供应不够及时的缺陷，在版编目便应运而生。美国是世界上最早实行在版编目的国家。美国国会图书馆于1958年6月至 1959年2月进行了在版编目试验，并于60年代末正式实行。早期的在版编目被称为书源编目。1970年在美国图书馆协会第89届年会上决定改称在版编目。据统计,美国全国出版的图书有80％以上实行了在版编目，共有2000余家出版商参加了在版编目计划。澳大利亚于1963年进行在版编目试验，从1972年11月起正式实行。70年代以后，苏联(1971),联邦德国(1974),巴西(1974)，墨西哥(1974)，英国(1975)，加拿大(1975)等国家先后实行了在版编目。为了进一步推动世界各国在版编目的开展，国际图书馆协会和机构联合会和联合国教育、科学和文化组织1982年 8月16～19日在加拿大渥太华联合召开国际在版编目会议，会议建议每个国家都应考虑由国家书目机构或与之相应的组织制定本国的在版编目计划。　　　　在中国，80年代初曾有个别出版社进行过在版编目试验。1986年11月，国家出版局和国家标准局联合召开在版编目讨论会，决定由有关单位组成领导小组负责在版编目工作的开展。 1987年7月开始起草有关在版编目的国家标准。在全国情报文献工作标准化技术委员会第七分会的主持下，已制定了《图书的题名页》和《图书在版编目数据单》两个国家标准。　　　　在版编目的著录格式，通常都遵循《国际标准书目著录》(ISBD)的原则规定。但在具体项目的规定上，各国稍有不同。有的国家例如美国和英国较简略，不包括出版发行项、载体形态项和丛书项等，实用性较差；有的国家例如苏联，在版编目数据则较详细，包括所有项目，甚至有内容提要，实用性较强。
