教育思考系列（一）美国教育的精神
美国人认为，从整体上讲，学校培养不出天才，而是培养公民，公民培养好了，人才也就有了。影响美国这一教育理念的有两位教育家，一是纽曼，一是杜威。两位都主张教育的目标是培养社会的好公民。
&&& 约翰·亨利·纽曼生于1801年，逝世于1890年，是英国的宗教领袖和教育家。他在《大学的理念》（有的翻译为《大学的理想》）一书中主张教育的目的是培养社会的好公民。
&&& 杜威是美国实用主义的教育思想家，他的教育即生活、学校即社会的思想，深深地影响了美国教育。其实，杜威还是一位平民主义的教育家，他坚决主张教育是培养合格的平民。他宣传平民主义教育思想，提出平民主义教育的两个要素：发展个性的智慧和养成协作的习惯。他大力提倡教育要培养富有个性精神和合作精神的平民和公民。
&&& 美国一些著名大学的校长们也纷纷拥护这种主张。如前哈佛大学校长巴布博士就认为，高校有八个功能：提高交流能力；培养分析能力；加强解决问题的能力；培养价值判断的能力；提高社会交往和互动的能力；培养对个人和环境的理解能力；改善个人对当今世界的了解能力；增长艺术和人文学科的知识。这就是美国流行的“开明教育”（或译“自由教育”）的观点。这种观点认为，教育的出发点是人，归宿也还是人；教育有为社会服务的责任，但最终目的是为人服务。而迈阿密大学前校长玛莱特博士则进一步认为，“开明教育”的根本责任是为了培养“人”和“公民”。
&&& 美国人认为，人文精神本质上是一种自由、自觉、批判的精神，是对善恶、美丑、是非的判断能力，宽容精神，尊重人，合作精神等，甚至包括人与自然的和谐相处，都是人文精神的体现。
&&& 美国的学校和教授们认为，独立思考、质疑一切是创造之魂，像人文精神一样也是教育之魂。耶鲁大学校长莱文先生说：“对学生来说，就是要对任何事情都提出质疑，不管是你从这个学校的老师，还是从同学那里学到的，或者是你从书上读到的。第二点是学习，虽然你应该先提问题，但是你需要学习读书，得到更多的信息来回答这些问题，努力学习。最后独立思考得出自己的结论，学会如何独立的思考。”
&&& 耶鲁大学及其校长的观点，今天已经成为美国人普遍认同和认真实践的一种教育理念。美国人认为，让孩子们具备批判性思维，才会增强独立思考的能力，才能孜孜不倦地追求真理，才能突破人伦关系，做到“吾爱吾师，吾尤爱真理”。
&&& 十九世纪德国洪堡大学创立时所确立的学术自 由、教学自由、学习自由的原则曾对美国高等教育 产生过重大影响，使得美国历史上曾经以洪堡大学为榜样，对美国教育进行了系列改革。如今美国 高等教育也形成了学术自由（Academic Freedom）、 学术自治(Acadmic Autonomy)、学术中立(Acadmic Neutrality)的传统。
&&& 美国第三任总统托马斯·杰斐逊说：“只有由受过教育的人民组成的国家才能保持自由。”
&&& 他一生都致力于教育事业的发展，是美国第一个提出完备初等教育的人，认为公民有义务完成初等教育。
&&& 他晚年立志于办教育，建学校，四处奔波，把全部身心投入到弗吉尼亚大学的创办之中。他亲自选址设计、规划、建筑；亲自选定教材、校训、校规和教师。专家认为，弗吉尼亚大学至今还是最适合于学习研究的地方，山清水秀，自然环境与人文景观融为一体，开阔幽深，意境悠远，富于自然和人文气息，传统和现代的和谐兼容，充分表现了杰斐逊的思想境界和教育理念。
&&& 杰斐逊十分重视教育，对教育一往情深。特别是到了晚年，他把全部精力和智慧都奉献给了教育。他认为自己一生致力于反专制、反暴政，致力于建立民主、自由的政治制度，如果人民没有受到好的教育，国家不是由受过教育的人组成，自己的努力和梦想都将成为泡影，或者如同沙上建塔，顷刻倒塌；或者如海市蜃楼，终究是幻境而已。他的教育思想，可以说奠定了美国教育的基本理念和基本框架，美国今天的教育之所以成为世界之强，饮水思源，其发轫之初时就得益于杰斐逊总统。
&&& 美国人和美国政府认为，美国就像一座大厦，支撑这座大厦有三大支柱，一是政府，二是宗教，三是教育。美国的教育体系完备，制度健全，各州各具特色。特别是近四千所各种类型的大学，私立的，公立的，教会的，色彩纷呈。有人这样评价过美国大学所遵守的大学精神：美国大学所坚守的大学精神是使大学成为创造和保存人类文明的场所，成为培养智者的地方，成为人类精神资源传递和知识创造的最佳学堂，成为一个充满创造和创新的具有独立品格的思想熔炉，成为一个拒绝庸俗、坚持操守、努力用思想知识、精神呼唤社会良知，引导社会前行的精神家园。
