)是其中影响最大,因而备受关注的一部。传统对等译论是很难就此现象作出解释的。而上世纪70年代西方翻译研究中出现的?文化转向#给翻译研究带来了新的视角,从而扩大了翻译研究的范围,在其影响下,研究者们纷纷将目光从原语世界转向了译语世界和译语文化。于是,包括?林译小说#在内的一些曾在历史上取得了巨大成功、产生过深远影响却不?忠实#的译作的翻译都得到了合理的解释和客观的评价。就??黑奴吁天录 的翻译而言,研究者们分别从文化[1]、话语[2]、操纵理论[3]和目的论[4]的角度展开过探讨,且全都是针对其翻译策略和翻译方法选择的解释。可以说,译界目前就??黑奴吁天录 的研究主要是从原语和译语两个视角出发,针对其翻译策略和翻译方法的研究,没有涉及到翻译活动中一个重要的环节???原语文本选择的研究,研究的视角和范围还有所局限。因此有必要从一个新的视角对??黑奴吁天录 的翻译展开研究,正如朱纯深所言,?在有些课题的研究中,换一个观[5]察角度,便可能带来新发现新见解#。而胡庚申教授的翻译适应际、文化、社会以及作者、读者、委托者等互联互动的整体。这表明翻译活动中无论是?适应#还是?选择#,都是由?译者#完成的:适应是译者的选择性适应,选择是译者的适应性选择,译者集适应与选择于一身。除了以上对翻译实质的定义外,该理论还认为,翻译的过程是译者适应与译者选择交替进行的循环过程;翻译的原则是多维度适应与适应性选择;翻译的方法是语言维、文化维、交际维的适应性选择转换;译文的评价标准是多维转换程度、读者反馈、译者素质等,最佳翻译是?整合适应选择程度#最高的翻译。另外,根据该理论,适应/选择作为译者的本能是多方面的,除了对?翻译生态环境#的适应/选择外,还可以分为译者对?需要#和?能力#的适应/选择。本文将具体从译者对?需要#、?能力#和?翻译生态环境#的适应/选择这三个视角,就林纾与魏易对UncleTom!sCabin翻译的全过程展开描述和分析。二、译者对?需要#的适应/选择翻译适应选择论认为,译者从事翻译活动除了与物质需要、家庭生计有关外,主要是出于社会的需求和精神的寄托。林纾()与魏易()生活的时代,时值中华民族内忧外患、生死存亡的关键时期。在这种历史条件下,一些爱国志士逐渐认识到,中国要想富国强兵、救亡图存,必须向西方学习。林则徐和魏源提倡?师夷之长技以制夷#,李鸿章、张之洞发起的?洋务#运动本着?中学为体、西学为用#的指导思想,想通过学习西方的先进科学技术力挽大清王朝的衰势。而1895年中日甲午战争的惨败,不仅宣告了这场运动的彻底失败,而且进一步加强了中国人的民族危亡意识。中国竟然败于他们从来都不放在眼里的日本。顿时,全国哗然一片。作为当时政界和学界重要代表人物的梁启超认为,源于西方的?政治小说#在日本的崛起中发挥了举足轻重的作用。他于1898年发起的?小说界革命#,便是要呼吁引进?政治小说#这一文学种类。于是,翻译西方和日本的?政治小说#便成了一时之需。另外,从1870年到1880年,排华情绪在全美迅速蔓延,而1882年美国国会通过的??排华法案 ,更加导致大多数的华人纷纷失业,颠沛流离,甚至遭到屠杀,在美华收稿日期:&123&选择论,%从译者的视角为我们提供了一个客观描述和解释译作产生过程的理论依据。鉴于此,本文拟以翻译适应选择论为理论基础,从译者适应/选择的角度,对??黑奴吁天录 从原语文本的选择到译语翻译策略的选择做一个全面的描述和解释,以期发现??黑奴吁天录 翻译的另一片广阔的天地。一、翻译适应选择论关于翻译适应选择论,胡庚申教授在其2004年所著??翻译适应选择论 一书中有详细论述。作者阐述的要点是?译者为中心#,认为翻译时?译文是译者的适应和选择#。具体来说,译文生成的过程就是以原文为典型要件的翻译生态环境选择译者和以译者为典型要件的翻译生态环境选择译文的总和。其中,?翻译生态环境#指的是原文、原语和译语所呈现的世界,即语言、交人和黑奴有着同样的遭遇。于是,作为废奴小说的UncleTom!sCabin便很自然地进入了译者的选择视野。此外,UncleTom!sCabin能作为原语文本,进入译者选择视野的另外一个重要原因是出自译者精神寄托和自我表达的需要。以林纾为例,作为一位深受儒家思想熏陶的爱国文人,起初想通过参加科举考试的方式报效国家,在历经七次失败之后便放弃了这条道路,后来,受梁启超等人文学思想和翻译思想的影响,林纾认为只有发展翻译事业,才能?开民智#,才能抵抗欧洲列强。他说:?吾谓欲开民智,必立学堂;学堂功缓,不如立会演说;演说又[6]不易举,终之惟有译书#。1900年8月,八国联军侵占北京,给林译语系统等多种因素。这些因素均可纳入语言、文化、交际等不同的维度。在翻译过程中,译者在多维度地适应翻译生态环境的基础上,做出与翻译生态环境相适应的不同选择,即所谓?适应性选择转换#。但是,基于两种语言和文化的差异,译者不可能适应所有的维度,他的?适应性选择#也是相对集中于语言维、文化维和交际维的转换。因此,下文将以译者在语言维、文化维和交际维的?适应性选择转换#的描述为切入点,分析其在呈现UncleTom!sCabin译文过程中的适应与选择。(一)语言维的适应/选择。在语言维的转换上,林纾与魏易选择用文言文进行翻译,这是其适应当时翻译生态环境中的社会维、诗学维、读者维和赞助者维基础上作出适应选择的结果。在林、魏二人生活的时代,由于清政府长期的闭关锁国,包括士大夫在内的大多数中国人对外界知之甚少,带有明显的排外倾向,在他们看来,尽管中国在科学、技术上落后于西方和日本,但在文化上始终是影响世界的中心,单就文学而言,西方没有哪个作家能与屈原、李白等相提并论。再者,传统的中国文学一直推崇用文言文写就的诗歌、散文,用白话文写就的小说被看做是?街谈巷语、道听途说者所造#,[10]纾的刺激更大,愈加坚定了他?广译东西之书#的决心。可见,以UncleTom!sCabin为原语文本进行翻译,也是出自林纾寄托爱国情怀、表达反帝保种思想的需要,正如林纾在??黑奴吁天录 跋中所指出的,?余与魏君同译是书,非巧于叙悲,以博阅者无端之眼泪,特为奴之势逼及吾种,不能不为大众一号??则吾书虽俚浅,[7]亦足为振作志气、爱国保种之一助#。三、译者对?能力#的适应/选择依据翻译适应选择论,为了提高译品的?整合适应选择度#,译者总是在可能的情况下,尽量不选自己无把握的、或把握不大的作品;尽量选择那些与自己能力相适应、相匹配的作品去翻译。此处,译者的能力不仅包括其双语、双文化能力,而且还包括其把握作品风格、情调的能力。??黑奴吁天录 的翻译由魏易口述,林纾执笔合作完成,因此,下面将通过对林纾与魏易的简单介绍,分析二者是如何就?能力#作出适应与选择的。林纾自幼嗜书如命,熟读??尚书 、??左传 、??汉书 等经典作品,20岁之前读书不下两千余册。31岁时结识了李宗言、李宗t兄弟。李氏兄弟大量的珍贵藏书更是开阔了林纾的阅读视野,其阅读量达三、四万册之多。广泛的阅读和不懈的努力使林纾具备了极高的古文造诣和文学素养,在当时的文学界享有颇高声誉,桐城传人马其昶就曾称赞说:?今之治古文者稀矣,畏庐先生,最[8]推为老宿#。除诗文??畏庐文集 、??畏庐诗存 、??闽中新乐府 能阅读文言作品在当时被看做是有身份、有知识的象征。因此,采用文言文翻译UncleTom!sCabin这一美国小说来吸引士大夫阶层的注意,是??黑奴吁天录 取得成功的重要原因之一。再者,林纾第一部翻译小说??巴黎茶花女遗事 在读者中的热烈反响,使出版商看到了林纾用文言文翻译外国小说的巨大市场潜力,他们力挺林纾其他译作的问世。但这里有一点需要注意,正如钱钟书所言,?林纾译书所用文体是他心目中认为较通俗、较随便、富于弹性的文言。它虽然保留若干(古文!成分,但比(古文!自由得多:在词汇和句法上,规矩不严密,收[11]容量很宽大#。如在?袜履尽失,指踵咸裂,每块冰上均有血迹#[12]这句中,?袜履尽失,指踵咸裂#这一句遵守的是严格的文言文法,而?每块冰上均有血迹#则更像是白话文。文中还有大量诸如?密司#、?恩及儿#等的音译词,这样做是为了在一定程度上满足读者的猎奇心理,因为在阅读了??巴黎茶花女遗事 之后,译者对外国小说具备了一定的接受能力,希望通过阅读了解更多关于国外的事情。(二)文化维的适应/选择。由于原语文化和译语文化在性质和内容上往往存在差异,为了避免从译语文化观点出发曲解原文,译者不仅需要注重原语的语言转换,还需要适应该语言所属整个文化系统,并在翻译过程中关注双语文化内涵的传递。通常,译入语文化中读者的接受状态往往会不同程度地作用于翻译过程,介入译者的审美判断和语言选择。在文化维的转换上,为了适应译语读者的欣赏习惯与审美情趣,林纾与魏易将西方文化意象、观念等进行了中国化改造。如?EvilrollsoffEva!smindlikedewoffacabbage-leaf#[13]译为?如吾夜娃尘污何得遽侵。此女[14]盖出水新荷耳。骤雨密点,不能有一星之驻#。?白菜叶#(cab??外,林纾还著有??冤海灵光 、??合浦珠 等多部小说传奇。魏易早年就读于上海圣约翰大学,曾担任过上海??译林 杂志执笔,又任教育部翻译,京师大学堂成立后,任大学堂英文教习,先后翻译了??马可波罗纪行 和英国历史学家柏克尔的名作??英国文明史 ,林[9]纾称赞他说:?挚友仁和魏君春叔,年少英博,淹通西文#。因此,就魏易而言,他已具备了作为译者所要求的基本能力,而林纾的加入更是锦上添花,提升了他对小说风格的把握能力;对于林纾,虽具有极高的文学素养和古文造诣,却不通英语,而魏易作为口述者的加入,则可以弥补他在这方面的不足。总之,二者合作,相得益彰,共同促成了??黑奴吁天录 的成功。至此可以说,林纾与魏易选择UncleTom!sCabin做为原语文本进行翻译,是其适应当时社会需求,表达反帝保种思想需要及彼此适应各自翻译能力的结果。四、译者对?翻译生态环境#的适应/选择由于译者对?能力#的适应/选择可以看作是译者对以原文为典型要件的翻译生态环境的适应与选择,本节所讨论的译者对?翻译生态环境#的适应/选择就专指译者对以自身为典型要件的翻译生态环境的适应与选择。换句话说,本节集中讨论译者在对UncleTom!sCabin的翻译中所采取的策略及相应的原因。前文已经提到,翻译适应选择论中的?翻译生态环境#包括原文,原语及&124&bage-leaf)译为了?新荷#,因为荷花在中国文化中有?出污泥而不染#的文化意象,而白菜却只是一种普通的蔬菜,无法让人想到夜娃良好的品质。在原文第14章,圣格来问其女儿夜娃为什么[15]要买下汤姆,夜娃回答,?Iwanttomakehimhappy#。夜娃此语出自其善良的品格以及基督教的仁爱。林纾则将其译为?此奴于[16]水中拯吾性命,顾欲得之#。前文提到,夜娃不小心掉进了河里,汤姆不顾危险地救了她,这样译,则意味着夜娃是处于?知恩图报#的中国传统美德而买下汤姆的。(三)交际维的适应/选择。翻译是一种跨文化的交际活动,而任何交际活动都有一定的交际目的。译者在交际维上所做的一系列适应性选择转换,主要是其适应翻译生态环境中目的维的结果。前文已经提到,林魏二人翻译UncleTom!sCabin是为了激起着中国民众的反帝热情,从而达到救国保种的目的。因此,在交际维的转换上,译者采取了删减、增添、改写等翻译方法。由于篇幅所限,这里仅以译者对奴隶制内容的翻译为例展开分析。1.删减法。为了有效地激起读者的抗敌情绪,译者删减了黑奴感到幸福快乐的情景。如原著第四章有12页多的篇幅,约有1/3的篇幅都用来描写主人之子乔治怎样教汤姆叔叔学习,克鲁大婶受到乔治表扬后怎样地得意,以及黑奴们举行宗教晚会是怎样地开心。然而,在译文中,整个这一章不足一页,所有这些幸福的场景都被浓缩成了这样几句,?解而培夫妇仁爱,克鲁夫妇亦欢聚,有天伦之乐。汤姆常受学于主人之子名乔治者,所以稍能读书。乔治亦甚昵之,不以常奴齿。一日傍晚,汤姆为邻人延饮,宾[17]主歌呼,方极酣嬉,而丧败意致之事至矣#。种选择,是其能动地适应?需要#、?能力#及特定?翻译生态环境#的结果。翻译适应选择论从译者适应/选择的视角,为我们提供了一个有效描述和解释翻译活动和翻译现象的方法。这样,像??黑奴吁天录 Having run up large debts, a
Kentucky farmer named Arthur Shelby faces the prospect of losing
everything he owns. Though he and his wife, Emily Shelby, have a
kindhearted and affectionate relationship with their slaves, Shelby
decides to raise money by selling two of his slaves to Mr. Haley,
a coarse slave trader. The slaves in question are , a middle-aged
man with a wife and children on the farm, and Harry, the young son
of Mrs. Shelby&s maid Eliza. When Shelby tells his wife about his
agreement with Haley, she is appalled because she has promised Eliza
that Shelby would not sell her son.
However, Eliza overhears the conversation between Shelby
and his wife and, after warning Uncle Tom and his wife, Aunt Chloe,
she takes Harry and flees to the North, hoping to find freedom with
her husband George in Canada. Haley pursues her, but two other Shelby
slaves alert Eliza to the danger. She miraculously evades capture
by crossing the half-frozen Ohio River, the boundary separating
Kentucky from the North. Haley hires a slave hunter named Loker
and his gang to bring Eliza and Harry back to Kentucky. Eliza and
Harry make their way to a Quaker settlement, where the Quakers agree
to help transport them to safety. They are joined at the settlement
by George, who reunites joyously with his family for the trip to
Meanwhile, Uncle Tom sadly leaves his family and Mas&r George,
Shelby&s young son and Tom&s friend, as Haley takes him to a boat
on the Mississippi to be transported to a slave market. On the boat,
Tom meets an angelic little white girl named Eva, who quickly befriends
him. When Eva falls into the river, Tom dives in to save her,
and her father, Augustine St. Clare, gratefully agrees to buy Tom
from Haley. Tom travels with the St. Clares to their home in New
Orleans, where he grows increasingly invaluable to the St. Clare
household and increasingly close to Eva, with whom he shares a devout
Christianity.
Up North, George and Eliza remain in flight from Loker
and his men. When Loker attempts to capture them, George shoots
him in the side, and the other slave hunters retreat. Eliza convinces
George and the Quakers to bring Loker to the next settlement, where
he can be healed. Meanwhile, in New Orleans, St. Clare discusses
slavery with his cousin Ophelia, who opposes slavery as an institution
but harbors deep prejudices against blacks. St. Clare, by contrast,
feels no hostility against blacks but tolerates slavery because
he feels powerless to change it. To help Ophelia overcome her bigotry,
he buys Topsy, a young black girl who was abused by her past master and
arranges for Ophelia to begin educating her.
After Tom has lived with the St. Clares for two years,
Eva grows very ill. She slowly weakens, then dies, with a vision
of heaven before her. Her death has a profound effect on everyone
who knew her: Ophelia resolves to love the slaves, Topsy learns
to trust and feel attached to others, and St. Clare decides to set
Tom free. However, before he can act on his decision, St. Clare
is stabbed to death while trying to settle a brawl. As he dies,
he at last finds God and goes to be reunited with his mother in
St. Clare&s cruel wife, Marie, sells Tom to a vicious
plantation owner named . Tom is taken to rural Louisiana
with a group of new slaves, including Emmeline, whom the demonic
Legree has purchased to use as a sex slave, replacing his previous
sex slave Cassy. Legree takes a strong dislike to Tom when Tom refuses to
whip a fellow slave as ordered. Tom receives a severe beating, and Legree
resolves to crush his faith in God. Tom meets Cassy, and hears her
story. Separated from her daughter by slavery, she became pregnant
again but killed the child because she could not stand to have another
child taken from her.
Around this time, with the help of Tom Loker&now a changed man
after being healed by the Quakers&George, Eliza, and Harry at last
cross over into Canada from Lake Erie and obtain their freedom.
In Louisiana, Tom&s faith is sorely tested by his hardships, and he
nearly ceases to believe. He has two visions, however&one of Christ
and one of Eva&which renew his spiritual strength and give him the
courage to withstand Legree&s torments. He encourages Cassy to escape.
She does so, taking Emmeline with her, after she devises a ruse
in which she and Emmeline pretend to be ghosts. When Tom refuses
to tell Legree where Cassy and Emmeline have gone, Legree orders
his overseers to beat him. When Tom is near death, he forgives Legree
and the overseers. George Shelby arrives with money in hand to buy
Tom&s freedom, but he is too late. He can only watch as Tom dies
a martyr&s death.
Taking a boat toward freedom, Cassy and Emmeline meet George
Harris&s sister and travel with her to Canada, where Cassy realizes
that Eliza is her long-lost daughter. The newly reunited family
travels to France and decides to move to Liberia, the African nation
created for former American slaves. George Shelby returns to the
Kentucky farm, where, after his father&s death, he sets all the slaves
free in honor of Tom&s memory. He urges them to think on Tom&s sacrifice
every time they look at his cabin and to lead a pious Christian
life, just as Tom did.

In the analysis of Chapters XXIV–XXVIII of Uncle Tom's Cabin, would it be ok if the reference to Uncle Tom's death was removed? It was really a spoiler for me, reading each analysis after finishing the set of chapters for that analysis, and I think other readers won't like these kinds of spoilers as well. Thanks and

This really helped with my reading of the book. It made it so much easier!! There wasn't any heavy vocab to go through, and it helped me understand the context easily. I will definitely come to this website first from now on!!
