A gas explosion at a coal mine in
central China has killed at least 56 people and left some others missing.
It is one of the worst mine accidents
in recent years, and officials said the chances of finding anyone still alive
were slim.
More than 400 people were working in
the Daping Mine in the city of Xinmi, Henan province, when the explosion happened late on Wednesday.
More than 200 people escaped but 56
miners were confirmed dead, and rescuers were searching for survivors, Xinhua News agency reported. But Sun Huashan, deputy administrator of the State Administration of Work Safety, said their chances for
survival were “rather slim”.
The bureau supervising Henan coal mine safety was also pessimistic.
“The situation is very tough in the
mine. The gas is very dense, and in such conditions, it’s hard to
survive,” an official at the bureau told the French
news agency AFP.
Thousands of people died in some poorly
regulated mines each year, despite the government promises to improve safety.

“It’s really cool to have a dad who
flies fighter jets,” thought 11-year-old Casey as she was watching her dad
flying overhead. Living on an Air Force base was not as bad as some people
might think. Casey rather enjoyed staying with some friends who had something
in common with each other. She especially loved the time when her dad would
come home each day and greet her with a new joke.
Today was different, though. When her
dad walked in the door, he looked sad for some reason. Casey didn’t like that
look. Her dad just kissed her on the forehead and told her mom that he needed
to talk to her. Casey knew something was wrong.
As her parents came out of the other
room, mom was crying. Dad sat down and began to explain to me that he was
called on to go to Iraq and that he would leave for one year. Casey was so astonished that
she couldn’t speak for a moment. She began to feel tears in her eyes. How could
she live without her dad for a whole year? She had a lot of questions and their
family discussed all the details that evening.
Soon, the day came. Casey’s dad was
leaving. As Casey and her mom watched him climb up the steps to his cockpit, the tears began to flow from
their eyes. It was hard for Casey to believe that she wouldn’t be seeing her

Consider, for instance, the writing
skill of spelling. In a recent survey, Graham reported that when children learn
to spell some words incidentally or informally as they read or write, good spellers learn many more
words through these methods than poor spellers. On the other hand, direct
spelling instruction improves the spelling performance of both good and poor
spellers. But it is unlikely that such instruction can account for all the
necessary growth to become an excellent speller. For example, adults can
typically spell 10,000 or more words correctly, but are only taught how to
spell about 3,000 words while in school and not all those words are mastered.
Therefore, both formal and informal methods should be stressed. This does not
mean, however, that equal amounts of both should be provided. Instead, the
level of formal and informal instruction needed by individual children, will
vary and should be adjusted. With balanced instruction, the fulcrum is the child, and balance
depends on what the child needs.
This same principle also applies to
considerations about the role of meaning, process, and form in writing
instruction since skilled writing depends on all three. The amount of emphasis
placed on each area should be adjusted so that it is consistent with the needs of the child. For example, Juel
found that some children who were poor writers had difficulties with both form
and process, whereas others had difficulties with just one or the other. Thus, some of the students should be given additional help in both
areas, whereas other students needed help in only one.

American turkey is famous for some of its characteristics. The bird can run at
a speed of more than 20 miles per hour, and it can fly in short bursts at a
speed of more than 50 miles per hour. Turkeys have excellent eyesight and
hearing. If they have a sharp sense of smell, they would be almost impossibly
forgetful.
are two signs of turkey presence. One is their V-like scratches while getting food. And the other is the
male turkey’s beaks, which are the size of a small finger with a bend at one
end, like the letter “J”.
Americans in the Southwest and Mexico kept turkeys for feathers and
food, and the birds with their alarm calls probably were good “watch dogs” as
well. The Indians used the feathers in ceremonies, and used the feathers to
form blankets. They hollowed out the large leg bones to serve as whistles.
Spanish transported wild turkeys from Mexico to Europe for domestication in the 16th century. European settlers
brought domesticated turkeys back to the New World. Finally, local decrease of wild
turkeys paralleled the European settlers’ spread across America. Today, widespread re-introduction
programs are under way to return the five species of wild turkeys to their
native habitats.
the late 1770’s, Benjamin Franklin suggested that the turkey should be the
symbol for the United States. He argued that the Bald Eagle
was no better than a fish-eater. The American turkey lost to the Bald Eagle by
a single congressional vote.

When some friends came to San Francisco, I
wanted them to come away with a good dining experience that shows off why San Francisco is
the cooking center of the West Coast. I had made a reservation at 1:15
on Sunday and was promptly seated. My husband and I took our two small children
with us, thinking that because it was lunch, we would be served quickly. How
wrong I was.
&&& I was deeply
embarrassed that I had brought my friends to the restaurant. The waitress took
forever to get our drink order, and then a while longer for the food.
Fortunately I ordered an appetizer for my 4-year-old son to eat, for that came within a reasonable
time. The main lunch order took forever. We sat down at 1:15 and our lunch
arrived at 2:45. The waitress brought us a complimentary plate of some sort of
delicious salad, but we had to deal with two small children who do not have the
patience to wait an hour for food. I’m an adult and even I was getting
impatient for the food, and so were my guests. It was my mistake to think that
at lunch, one could get lunch at the speed normally at a five-start restaurant
for dinner. My guests were very understanding that
these things did happen, but it was irksome that people who sat down
after us got their lunch before us and left before we received our food.
&&& Yes, the food was
delicious. Will I go to this restaurant again? Doubtful, as having what
appeared to be forgotten by the wait staff has left a bad taste in my mouth.

friends will go to this restaurant again.

A. An terrible day
B. An embarrassed lunch experience

What does &&76& &mean? Where does it come from? This is a

Flying dreams are dreams where you
become aware that you are dreaming. Many dreamers have &&36& &the ability to fly in their dreams as a
pleasant, &&37& &and relaxed experience.
If you are flying with &&38& &and enjoying the scene and landscape &&39& , then it suggests that you &&40& &on top of a situation. You have risen
above something. It &&41& &also mean that you have gained a
different view on things. Flying dreams and the ability to &&42& &your flight is representative of your own
&&43& &sense of power.
Having difficulties staying in flight
suggests a &&44& &of power in controlling your own
circumstances. You may &&45& &to stay overhead or stay on course.
Things like power lines, trees, or mountains may further &&46& &your flight. These barriers show an
obstacle or person
who is standing &&47& &your way in your waking life. You need to
be certain that who or what is &&48&& &you from moving forward.
&&& If you are feeling &&49& &when you are flying or you feel that you
are flying too high, then it suggests that you are afraid of &&50& &and of success.
&&& In &&51& , we do not have the ability to fly.
Thus such dreams may show that &&52& &is beyond our
physical limitations. In your mind, you can be &&53& &and do whatever you want to. Another way
of interpreting flying dreams is that these dreams symbolize your &&54_&& &mind and will. You feel undefeatable and nobody can tell you what
you cannot do and achieve. Undoubtedly these dreams &&55& &you a great sense of freedom.

Each year, road accidents kill a
million people and injure millions more. The economic costs are greatest for
developing countries. Earlier this year, the United Nations called for an
activity to improve road safety.
Engineers in the United States have
designed ten new concrete mixtures that they think could make bridges last longer.
Professor Paul Tikalsky
leads the experiments with a team at Pennsylvania State University. He
says bridges made of concrete now last about twenty-five to thirty-five years.
But he says the new mixtures might extend that to seventy-five or even
one-hundred years.
Concrete is made of stone, sand, water
and cement. The materials in the cement hold the concrete together. Ancient
Romans built with concrete. Yet strengthened concrete bridges did not appear
until the late eighteen-hundreds. People keep looking for new ways to improve
concrete.& Professor Tikalsky says it is one of the most complex
of all chemical systems.
The new mixtures designed by his team
contain industrial waste products. He says these make the concrete better able
to resist damage from water and salt over time. One of the products is fly ash.
This is released into the air as pollution when coal is burned.
Professor Tikalsky
says particles of fly
ash are almost exactly the same size and chemical structure as common cement. This is the most
costly material in concrete. So using fly ash to replace some of it would save
Over the next two years, engineers will
study ten bridges in Pennsylvania. These were built from different cement mixtures designed by
Professor Tikalsky’s team. He says longer-lasting
bridges could save the state more than thirty-five-million dollars a year. And
he says the materials would be environmentally good.

It’s been a banner year for natural
disasters. Tsunamis and hurricanes, in particular, have destroyed homes and
cities, and taken thousands of lives. Areas along the oceans have been damaged
seriously.
However. Scientists working along the southeastern coast of India
have found that trees appear to protect seaside settlements from the worst
effects of a tsunami. When a tsunami swept through Asia last winter, it caused big
destruction. Villages surrounded by trees, however, suffered far less damage
than villages without protective forests.
Scientists have long suspected that
the land nearby. To test this idea, ecologists started collecting data last
Dec. 27, the day after the big tsunami struck. They chose to focus on a
21-kilometer stretch of coast in Cuddalore, India. This stretch was perfect for the study because it was straight and
uniform, so waves hit every part of it with about the same amount of force.
Other places were hit harder than Cuddalore, but the four to five meter (13 to 16 foot) waves
that swept into Cuddalore were big enough to destroy
two villages. Three other villages survived. The only difference was that the
first two had no protective mangroves nearby, while the other three had
hundreds of meters of mangroves between them and the ocean.
A few kilometers away, some other
villages were surrounded by trees called casuarinas. The trees had been planted
after a cyclone 20 years ago. These settlements survived, too, with
little damage.
The research is important because
mangrove forests have been disappearing. People use the wood and destroy the
trees to make room for crops.
Protecting and restoring the world’s
coastal forests could be the secret to survival when future tsunamis strike.

There are more and more advertisements
around us in our life. Advertisements are playing an important part in certain
ways. They help people know more about new products and help the producers increase
their sales. Many magazines, newspapers and TV stations can make lots of money
by advertising for the producers.
Advertisements, however, have brought
about many bad effects. There are so many advertisements around us that we are
unable to tell which are true and which are not. The costs on advertisements
undoubtedly make the prices of the products much higher.
In my opinion, advertisements are
important to our life and society. We really hope that every advertisement
should obey the advertising laws and can contribute to the society.

On October 12th,
2005, Shenzhou VI with two astronauts was sent into space from Jiuquan, Gansu Province. After circling 80 times at the height
of up to 347 kilometers, it landed on the grassland in Inner Mongolia on October 17th.
During the flight,
the astronauts did a lot of scientific experiments according to the plan. They
tasted as many as 50 kinds of food and even called and talked with their
families from space.
The successful
launch and return of Shenzhou VI is another great
achievement in space science of our country. We are really proud of it.
