Tina is eleven years old. She used to
have a bad habit. She bit(咬)her
nails(指甲).“I used to do it when I was
young,”she says.“I wanted to stop,and sometimes I even thought
to give up for a day. But the next thing I knew,I was doing it again.” Her friend Kristen used to

It seems hard to break bad habits. But if

Break bad habits by doing useful things.
Instead of biting your nails or playing
with your hair,keep
your fingers busy writing or drawing. Eat some fruits instead of junk food.
Hold on to it.

If you spend some time in an
English-speaking country you might hear the term “etiquette”. It
means normal and polite social behavior. This may seem like a difficult word at
first, but it can be very useful to understand.
Etiquette is not the same in
every culture or in every situation. For example, standing very close to the
person you are talking with is quite common in some Asian countries. However,
if you do this in Europe, some
people might feel uncomfortable. Even in China,we all know that etiquette is not the
same in all situations. Perhaps we think that talking loudly in our own homes
is fine, but there are other places where talking loudly is not allowed. For
example, most people would agree that talking loudly in a library, a museum or
a movie theater is impolite. Even if you are with your friends, it is better to
keep your voice down in public places.
If we see someone breaking the
rules of etiquette, we may politely give them some suggestions. One of the most
polite ways is to ask someone,“Would
you mind doing this” or “Would you mind not doing that”.
People don't
usually like to be criticized, so we have to be careful how we do this.
Although rules of etiquette
can often be different, some rules are the same almost everywhere in the world! For example, dropping litter
is almost never allowed. If you see someone you know doing this, you can ask
him,“Would you
mind picking it up?”

Halloween is a strange
holiday. It started several centuries ago in Europe. It began as “Hallow
Evening” meaning “holy night”. At that time November 1st was called “All
Saints' Day” and people honoured all the saints who did not have their own
special day. People believed that October 31st was the time when all the evil
spirits were supposed to be active. So people would play all sorts of pranks on
each other.
Black is one of the
traditional Halloween colors,probably
because Halloween festivals and traditions took place at night. Pumpkins are a
symbol of Halloween,so
orange has become the other traditional Halloween& color. Making lanterns
out of pumpkins is a Halloween custom.
Halloween is great fun for
children. They dress up as ghost, witches(女巫).Small
children go “Trick-or-Treating”. They wear costumes, knock on doors, and shout,“Trick or Treat!” People almost always choose
to give them candy as a treat, instead
of choosing to receive a trick from the children. Adults sometimes “trick or
treat” their friends,too.
Usually the “treat” is a glass of wine or some small gifts.
