2015全美最佳公立大学排行榜
  《城市商报》(American City Business Journals)旗下著名网站“The Business Journals”发布了最新的美国公立大学排名Top 100。排在前5名的分别为密歇根大学、北卡罗莱纳州大学、、威廉与玛丽学院以及。该榜单参合了两种官方机构的调查数据及其他4个机构的大学排名,在高等教育成本上升的时代,是一份重要参照。
  据“The Business Journals”报导,资深招生官员理查德?莫尔(Richard Moll)曾任职于多所公立和私立大学,包括私立的在内,他觉得不少公立大学是以“在公立学校的价格提供常春藤盟校的教育”,但很多人并不清楚这一点。莫尔将这些一流的公立大学名之为“公立常春藤”(Public Ivies),并在1985年出版了一本专著,点到了包括密歇根大学(University of Michigan)在内的8所学校。
  30年过去,据《美国城市商报》(下简称《商报》)对全美484所公立大学的最新统计分析,密歇根大学仍然是领头羊,第2至5名分别为:密歇根大学、北卡罗莱纳州大学、弗吉尼亚大学、威廉与玛丽学院以及加州大学伯克利分校。按莫尔书中的标准,这些学校都称得上是“公立常春藤”。
  《商报》依据的是美国国家教育统计中心和美国人口普查局的社区调查数据,也综合参照了四种国家级出版物的大学排名,包括《福布斯》(Forbes)杂志、《基普林格》(Kiplinger's)、《美国新闻与世界报导》(U.S. News and World Report)和《华盛顿月刊》(Washington Monthly)。
  密歇根大学全面领先
  排名指标则精确到分为19个部份,公布出来的资料并不限于大学排名,还具体到各校在其中6方面的评级,包括招生标准(严格与否)、在读和毕业率、声望、学杂费住宿费(合理与否)、院系和学生社团的多样性、所在区域的人口规模和经济实力。虽然没有一所学校获得全5星,但密歇根大学还是全面胜出,其优势详述如下:
  1. 在读率高:该校2012年秋季入学的6,124名新生中,只有191名没留在该校读二年级,在读率合96.9%,在公立大学中仅次于弗吉尼亚大学(97.0%)。
  2. 毕业率高:75.8%的学生在4年以内获得学士学位。达到3/4比例的还有3所大学:北卡罗莱纳大学、弗吉尼亚大学、威廉与玛丽学院。
  3. 学生多样化:该校41.8%的本科生来自其他州或国家,在排名前20的公立大学里,只有(Georgia Institute of Technology,48.4%)和威斯康星大学(the University of Wisconsin,44.2%)超过这一比例。

  调查:不欠学费的学生更幸福

  但是,1985年困扰莫尔的大众观念今天仍很普遍,这种观念认为,上私立大学的学生更会赚钱、更幸福,所以学费更高是合理的。
  不过盖洛普公司最近对3万名美国大学毕业生进行的研究却发现,在就读期间背负了4万美元以上学费贷款的美国大学生中,只有2%人的感觉特别幸福,而无债一身轻的学生,这一比例却有14%。
  调查:上何大学读书并不重要
  盖洛普的研究也发现,在社会、经济、健康、价值感和人际关系5方面都健康发展的私立大学毕业生,在全部私立大学毕业生中占比11%,而公立大学毕业生,这一比例同样是11%。其结论是,上什么样的大学并非工作与生活质量的决定因素,关键还是学生参与的学术项目、课外活动、实习及相关活动,换句话说就是:上哪去不重要,如何做才重要。
