 NativeVision is a unique youth enrichment and empowerment initiative for American Indian children, operated by the Johns Hopkins Center for American Indian Health. Launched in 1996 in partnership with the NFL Players Association and The Nick Lowery Charitable Trust, more than 40,000 Native youth and tribal community members have been reached.American Indian youth suffer the poorest health, socioeconomic and educational status of any racial or ethnic group in the country. NativeVision overcomes these issues by engaging professional and collegiate athletes as volunteer mentors to promote healthy lifestyles, fitness, and the pursuit of education through the vehicle of sports.The guiding principle for NativeVision is to cultivate the core strengths, values and positive relationships of American Indian youth that will make them resilient and help them transition to a healthy, productive and fulfilling adulthood. The hallmark of NativeVision is an annual sports and life skills camp that attracts youth from tribes across the country. At the camp, professional and top college athletes representing football, basketball, soccer, track, volleyball and lacrosse conduct sports clinics interspersed with break-out sessions that promote self-esteem, discipline, healthy living habits and the pursuit of education.At the camp, workshops are offered for the children and local community members on positive parenting, nutrition, leadership and entrepreneurship. Tribal leaders host traditional feasts, traditional games, dance and song exhibitions. Two $5,000 college scholarships are awarded each summer through a competitive national application process. The 2016 NativeVision Camp will be held in Okmulgee, OK capitol city of the Muscogee (Creek) Naton on June 9-11, 2016.   Exact location and details will follow soon.    Johns Hopkins Center operates a NativeVision year-round program in three tribal communities that have hosted the summer camp. The program is currently operating with the White Mountain Apache tribe, Santo Domingo Pueblo, and with the Navajo in Shiprock, NM and Tuba City, AZ.Goals are to:Improve physical fitness.Promote healthy food choices.Increase sense of connectedness to culture, community, and nature.Increase self-esteem and vision for the future.Improve youth academic progress.
