Astruck BundertakenC violated Dsucceed
A.struck
受到了冲击整句的意思是,他们最初的成功受到了一连串惨痛失败的冲击.Accessibility links

Les Reed makes an unlikely Willy Wonka but, upon entering the usually secretive inner sanctum of ’s training ground, there is a feeling akin to being granted access to a factory without equal.
Football players and not chocolate are the currency at this ?33 million centre of excellence and, with the first-team second in the , aspirations stretch well beyond even producing the next
or Theo Walcott.
“My gut feeling is that we will maintain a position at the top end of the Premier League,” says Reed, the director of football. “Whether that’s eighth, where we finished last year, or first, I don’t know. There’s a long way to go but I feel we will sustain a position in that area given a fair wind and no horrendous run of injuries.”
And, with the club sitting above the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City, is an eventual Champions League place with a largely home-grown team really the target?
“Absolutely,” says Reed. “There’s no point investing all this with an aspiration to survive.”
The wider question is whether best practice and Southampton’s search for every conceivable edge in their preparation can ultimately succeed against the financial power of their rivals. Recent history might say ‘no’ but it is impossible to spend time listening to the backroom staff and not at least wonder if something extraordinary is happening.
Expertise is lurking in every corner. Mo Gimpel, the club’s sports medicine and science manager, has been at Southampton for 16 years and can still remember when the training ground was little different to the pavilion of a Sunday league team.
The club are now at the stage where they can implement the most advanced possible technologies and innovations, from GPS tracking, urine and blood tests to twice weekly saliva samples that help measure immunity as well as physical and psychological stress.
It can be no coincidence that Southampton have fielded such a settled team this season and have also played their strongest starting XI throughout the Capital One Cup.
“When you look at the last two seasons of injuries, we had the lowest soft-tissue rates in the Premier League,” Gimpel says. “Then, add on the ProZone stats for the physical output of the players on match-day, and for the last two seasons the first-team have been on top of that. That gives us great belief. The perfect scenario is to out-run everyone with the lowest injury rates.”
The downstairs of what was on Wednesday named the “Markus Liebherr Pavilion” – in honour of the club’s late former owner – is the base for all the medical and physical support structures.
It includes a hydrotherapy pool with a deep and shallow lane, as well as underwater cameras to record running posture and a temperature that can be adjusted with a phone.
Up the stairs, and just around the corner from the office of manager Ronald Koeman, which has a picture on the wall of the legendary Dutch coach Rinus Michels, there is an entire department dedicated to analytics and recruitment.
There are 10 computer screens of football matches being watched throughout the day by full-time analytics staff. In another corner is Rod Ruddick – who discovered Bale – and a team of recruitment staff.
The most intriguing element of the department, though, is what is known as the ‘black-box’.
It is a small room with a phone, a desk and a row of chairs that faces a giant screen. Southampton designed their own computer software that is used in this room and, with just a few clicks, Koeman, Reed and head of recruitment Paul Mitchell can be watching any player, team or target anywhere in the world.
It is a support structure that underpinned how Southampton were so smoothly able to cope this year with the loss of a chairman, manager and five leading players.
Outside at what is now called the “Staplewood Campus” there is an adjoining first-team training pitch that has been re-laid to the exact same specification as St Mary’s.
There are then ‘match-day’ under-21 and under-18 pitches working all the way back to reduced size 60m x 40m pitches for the under-sevens, eights and nines.
The layout of the site is designed to represent the pathway towards the first-team. A further ?9 million has been committed by owner Katharina Liebherr towards a new education centre with classrooms and a psychology lab as well as an accommodation block where players can rest between double training sessions.
In officially opening the training centre alongside Liebherr, chairman Ralph Krueger quoted from the “Southampton manifesto” that was published this summer.
“We are Southampton, we don’t just buy success, we breed it,” he said.
Reed then revealed what he hopes will be the next big change to the facility.
“The aspiration is to compete with the best,” he said. “That’s what we want the players to buy into when they sign here at nine years of age. We want them to believe and the next addition will be down in reception with the trophy cabinet.”
