A civilian has died after shots were fired at a café in Copenhagen where a
meeting about freedom of speech was being held.
Danish TV2 channel said there were some 30 bullet holes in the window outside
the Krudttoenden café and at least two people were taken out on stretchers
after the attack at about 4pm local time (3pm GMT).
The event being held there was entitled Art, blasphemy and the freedom of
expression and Danish security forces said the attack was most likely linked
to terror.
Controversial Swedish artist Lars Vilks, who drew the Prophet Muhammad as a
dog, leading to threats from Islamist militant groups, was at the event but
unhurt. His website, , said the event was to mark the
anniversary of the fatwa against Salman Rushdie.
Danish prime minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt told reporters in Copenhagen: “We
feel certain now that it’s a politically motivated attack, and thereby it is
a terrorist attack.
“We take this situation extremely seriously. We are in a high alarm all over
the country, and our main priority at this stage is to catch the
perpetrators and make sure that we find them as soon as possible.”
One man was killed and three police were shot and injured at the event, where
the French ambassador Francois Zimeray was speaking. He has since tweeted to
say that he was still alive.
In a statement, French president Francois Hollande called the Copenhagen
shooting “deplorable” and said the

Obese people without jobs will be forced to diet or lose their benefits under plans to be set out by David Cameron today.
Alcoholics and drug addicts will also face being stripped of their benefits, worth about ?100 a week, if they refuse to accept a recommended treatment plan.
The move is the first salvo in the Conservatives’ week focusing on welfare and is designed to capitalise on widespread public unhappiness at the scale of benefit claims.
However, it comes at the end of a difficult week for the prime minister, in which he faced accusations that the Tories are too tolerant of tax avoiders, meaning he could face unfavourable comparisons between his treatment of the wealthiest and poorest in society.
The Tories say that there are almost 100,000 people claiming sickness benefits because of “treatable conditions” such as drug or alcohol addiction, or obesity, costing up to ?10 million
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) is investigating products containing a
potentially deadly nut contamination.
Experts warned the contamination could be worse than the horsemeat scandal
because they threatened the lives of allergy sufferers.
Professor Chris Elliott, who led the inquiry into the horsemeat fraud that hit
British supermarkets in 2013, told the Independent: “This is the first real
test of the UK food supply system since the horsemeat crisis and it’s
actually much, much more serious.
“It’s much more serious because the whole horsemeat scandal nobody got ill and
nobody died because of it. But if you happen to be allergic to almonds or
peanuts there is the potential of getting ill or even dying because of it.
So the challenge is there.
“This time the crop failure is cumin and it does seem to be that there is
fraud going on.”
