throw一词无论在口语还是在书面语中，都属于常用词。从古到今，不少含有throw的英语习语走进了人们的生活。一起了解一下吧。throw ... to the lions古罗马有一种非常残忍的娱乐活动，那就是角斗。残酷的古罗马人不仅让角斗士互相厮杀，还将人和猛兽放在一起，观看人兽搏斗来取乐。有时，他们将囚犯或罪犯抛给狮子吃，那人可就危险了。故短语throw ... to the lions的字面意思是“把……扔给狮子”，引申为“把……当作牺牲品，弃……于危险而不顾”。如：She felt that her boss would throw her to the lions if anything went wrong.她感到一旦出了什么岔子，自己就会被老板甩掉不管。throw down the gauntlet / glove在中世纪，骑士挑战别人时，会摘下自己所戴的用皮革和金属片做的铁手套扔在地上(throw down the gauntlet / glove)，如对方接受挑战，就会将手套从地上捡起(take up the gauntlet / glove)。后来它们演变为两条习语，前者表示“向某人挑战”，后者表示“应战”。如：When John challenged my conclusions, he threw down the gauntlet. I was ready for an argument.约翰质疑我的结论，是向我挑战，我准备和他辩论。They were quick to take up the gauntlet thrown down by the opposition.他们立刻接受了对方的挑战。throw one’s hat in the ring骑士挑战扔手套，拳击手挑战就扔帽子。拳击场上，如果有谁想向获胜者挑战，把帽子扔上拳击台就可以了。故throw one’s hat in the ring表示“参加竞赛、竞选和讨论等”。如：He didn’t throw his hat in the ring for class president until the last minute.直到最后一刻他才宣布竞选班长。throw in / up the sponge / towel拳击比赛中挑战时要往台上扔帽子，认输也要往台上扔东西。如果一方选手连续遭到对手猛打，眼看就要被击昏，他的经理人或助手觉得败局已定，回天无力，就会将给拳击手擦身用的sponge或towel扔上拳击台，表示认输。因此，throw in / up the sponge / towel表示“承认失败，放弃不干”。如：I hate my work. Sometimes I feel like throwing in the sponge.我不喜欢我的工作，有时候真想不干了。throw in one’s hand打牌时，如果一个人觉得这一局已经输定了，或是没有了取胜的希望，他也扔东西———他会把手中的牌扔在桌子上。因此throw in one’s hand表示“退出比赛，甘拜下风”。如：Bill spent only one year in that factory and then threw in his hand.比尔在那厂子里只干了一年就不干了。throw cold water on汉语里表示打击别人的热情时，常用的一个说法是“泼冷水”，有意思的是，英语里也有个相应的表达，不过英语中的冷水不仅能“泼”(pour) 出去，还能“扔”出去呢！这个表达就是throw / pour cold water on something。如：There was no one to throw / pour cold water on my optimism.没有人给我的乐观情绪泼冷水。throw / put a wet blanket on / over被人泼了冷水，当然要扫兴了。说到扫兴，英语里除了冷水，还能扔的东西是“湿毯子”(wet blanket)。湿毯子本来是用于扑灭火的，后词义引申，如用在人身上，就指“令人扫兴的人”，用于事物即指“扫兴的事物”。wet blanket常和动词throw和put连用，构成词组throw / put a wet blanket on / over，表示“使扫兴，对……泼冷水”。如：That bad news threw a wet blanket over plans of investors to get into the stock market.对想在股票市场投资的人来说，那条消息就像给他们泼了一盆冷水一样。小小的一个throw，竟能引出这么多的故事来。我们在平时的学习中要勤查词典，逐步积累，从而不断扩充自己的知识面，丰富自己的表达能力。更多精彩内容，请搜索“英语周报”微信并关注

such as、for example和like的区别 1)for example和such as都可当作“例如”解.但such as用来列举事物,插在被列举事物与前面的名词之间.例如：
①The farm grows various kinds of crops, such as wheat, corn, cotton and rice.
这个农场种植各种各样的庄稼,例如麦子,玉米,棉花和稻米.
Some of the European languages come from Latin,such as French,Italian and Spanish. 有些欧洲语言来源于拉丁语,例如,法语、意大利语和西班牙语. Boys such as John and James are very friendly.像约翰和詹姆斯这样的男孩都很友好. 【注意】
(1)such as一般不宜与and so on连用.
(2)对前面的复数名词部分起列举作用,一般不全部列出.故不可以说：
He knows four languages, such as Chinese, English, French and German. 应将such as改成namely, 后面加逗号.即：He knows four languages, namely, Chinese, English, French and German.
2)for example意为用来举例说明,有时可作为独立语,插在句中,不影响句子其他部分的语法关系.例如：
①A lot of people here, for example, Mr John, would rather have coffee.
这儿的许多人,例如约翰先生,宁愿喝咖啡.For example,air is invisible. 例如,空气是看不见的. He,for example,is a good student. 例如,他就是个好学生.
