A secure open-source chat app
Signal Private Messenger is a free app for secure one-to-one or group chats on mobile phones, avoiding SMS fees, and with support for file attachments and media sharing.
That's nothing unusual, but Signal's major plus point is its security. End-to-end encryption protects everything you're doing from snoopers, even Signal's server doesn't have access to your communications, and the app is open-source so technical users can review the code to check what's going on.
Signal doesn't even require any user names, passwords or PINs - you just use your existing phone number and address book. (Which is easy to use, but keep in mind it also gives your phone number to every chat partner.)
The developer also warns that the Android version "is not currently compatible with tablets, but support for larger screens is on our roadmap and will be included in a future release".
Changes in 3.15.2:
★ Bug fixes and performance improvements.
There are better chat programs around, but Signal Private Messenger's&core security is excellent, and the developer has even been endorsed by Edward Snowden and Bruce Schneier.

WhatsApp Messenger is the world's most popular instant messaging app for smartphones.
You can use it to send and receive text and voice messages, photos, videos, even call your friends in other countries, and because it uses your phone's internet connection it might not cost you anything at all (depending on whether you'll pay data charges).
It's easy to set up and use. There's no need to create and remember new account names or pins because it works with your phone number, and uses your regular address book to find and connect you with friends who use WhatsApp already.
You can talk one-to-one or in group chats, and because you're always logged in there's no way to miss messages. Even if your phone is turned off, WhatsApp will save your messages and display them as soon as you're back online.
There's plenty more (location sharing, contact exchange, message broadcasting) and the app is free for a year, currently $0.99/ year afterwards.
