Baby suffocated beside sleeping parents
A baby suffocated as she slept in the same bed as her parents, an inquest heard yesterday. Three-week-old Sacha Salmon was found face down under a pillow in their double bed. Her parents - Paul Salmon and Katrina Ellis, both 32 - had taken her into their bed only two hours before because she was unsettled. As Sacha suffocated, her twin sister Chloe slept safely in a cot next to them. Mr Salmon told the Cambridge inquest he got up to go to the lavatory on the morning of November 19 last year and heard Miss Ellis scream. 'She was hysterical and said, "She's not breathing?,' he went on. 'I saw Katrina holding Sacha up in the air. She was very pale and there was moist blood in the left corner of her mouth.' Mr Salmon said Sacha was vomiting as he gave her mouth- to- mouth resuscitation: 'The vomit had blood in it and she was also bleeding from her nose,' he said. Miss Ellis told the inquest: 'She was face down on the bed. There was a mass of pillows. I panicked and couldn't find her.' Asked how Sacha came to be face down, she said: 'I don't know.' The baby was taken from the family's home in Cambridge to the city's Addenbrooke's Hospital, where she was revived but later died. A postmortem examination showed the cause was asphyxiation resulting from 'co-sleeping'. Pathologist Dr Nat Cary said: 'It's not fully understood how sleeping deaths occur. Some may be through straightforward over-laying.' The inquest heard that Sacha was the weaker of the twins when they were born and had to be fed by tube for the first few days of her life. Mr Salmon, a diamond drilling contractor who worked abroad, told the inquest he had been out drinking with friends on the evening before Sacha's death because he was returning to France and it was his birthday. He had had about six or seven pints but said he did not feel drunk. The parents were arrested and questioned about Sacha's death but no action was taken. Coroner David Morris recorded a verdict of death by misadventure, saying: 'There's no criticism of the way the twins were being brought up.' Penny Hames, author of the National Childbirth Trust's Book of Sleep, said after the hearing that 'co-sleeping' could be safe but not if either parent smokes, or if one has taken drugs or been drinking.
