America and Russia are engaged in serious negotiations aimed at getting rid of President Assad's chemical weapons and preventing a US-led attack on his regime. The diplomatic pressure seems to have had an impact already. The UN has announced it's received Syria's application to join the international convention banning chemical weapons. The Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has been trying to set out his position, telling Russian TV he was prepared to come clean, but there were conditions.
The Russian proposal is not a unilateral one. Syria will accept it if America stops military threats, and if other countries supplying the rebels with chemical weapons will also abide by the agreement. Russia is the only country who can make the agreement happen as Syria has neither contacts with nor trust in America.
As he went into talks with his American counterpart in Geneva, the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said through an interpreter he was hopeful that successful talks would mean there was no American attack.美国和俄罗斯正就消除阿萨德总统的化学武器和防止美国带头打击叙利亚政权进行严肃的协商。看似外交压力已有了一定的成效。联合国表示已收到叙利亚愿意加入《禁止化学武器公约》缔约国的申请。叙利亚总统巴沙尔o阿萨德正尽力陈述其所处地位，告诉俄罗斯媒体他准备消除化学武器，但是这有条件。
