But really this excercise is a bit moot since you are not paying the price of the console up front....you pay it when you buy the games...so the price of purchase is nicely subsidised. At this price I might just buy the console....

OK imagine this scenario....me and JC, my Lord and savior are catching a few left hand breaks in St Francis bay...when all of a sudden I am struck by lightning and attacked by a great white shark at the same time.....
Calculate the probability and that's still more likely than I would ever buy a console....but if I did, it would be a PS4 no doubt. I am of the opinion that Microsoft do not want to be in the console business anymore so they made the Xbox One.....
Imagine the scenario above in which I cut back and use the tip of the board to redirect the lightning to kill the shark and then surf past Sally Fitzgibbons who hands me her phone number with a wink...that's the likelihood I ever buy an Xbox One.
But that's also the likelyhood I buy a $500 computer to play Metro Last L)

doesnt matter, the fan base will purchase it.
chrsplmrWhy PS4 cost so cheap but all games flying like a plane?
This is because these units will be sold at a loss. The profit is in the Games purchased.
I have looked at this hard. Especially with the new AMD APU's with the 8000 series radeons ..
but unlike Sony and Microsoft .. this challenge requires real dollar limits ..
'We' can't offer it at a cost less that it was to build.
I also noted that not one of the systems offered above has 8gb of ddr5 .. or an OS.
The Sony/Microsoft systems will play the latest and greates and those not released yet.
Although they will never touch a real gaming rig .. a real gaming rig will never be bought for $500
If Microsoft/Sony can't build a 'lamer than ours' gaming system for $500, how can 'we' ?
['They' are buying parts by the 10's of 1000's @ steep discounts remember.]
With all due respect MarshallR - thank you for the Challenge - but I failed. sorry bro.c.
Arne .. hahaha .. u kill'd me bro+
kknI also noted that not one of the systems offered above has 8gb of ddr5 .. or an OS.
linux is free, you can add a &win&)
chrsplmrlinux is free, you can add a &win&)
Fair enough .. but wait !!! How many hours to 'build' it and add/if you can find all the
drivers ect. ?? X (times) your personal per hour worth ??? ... hahhaa .. just say'n ..
and then we still have that 8Gb problem .. to be comparative ..
Don't get me wrong .. If you gave me a console I'd never turn it on .. I give it to
one of the kids .. but this is almost like comparing a 'land line' to a 'smart' phone .. almost.
Still I think it is an exercise worth doing for discussions sake and to really brings home the point -
there simply is no comparison-but for $500 it's not a bad deal-if your selling consoles.imho.c.
nvmisfitI would imagine if you were trying to build a PC that rivaled the consoles in price you would also want it to match it's performance at that price. Since both consoles use a CPU/GPU integrated architecture, I would imagine their designs are much more cost and performance efficient than a consumer built PC would be. They are in the business of making money so why wouldn't they design their products to save them as much money as possible during manufacturing? I came across an interesting article that is related to this thread topic. Check it out.

Nickhead420Why is everyone forgetting that you need a $100+ OS before you can start gaming?
I mean, it really is part of the cost of building a computer.
So I believe the real goal should be to build a gaming comp WITH an OS for the price of a console.
They come with OS's too.
And the only reason the XBO is $100 more is because it comes with a camera.
So the real goal should be to create a usable gaming pc with an OS for $400.

This is the best I could do. Not the greatest PC, but it would get the job done. I would like to note that PC gamers are NOTHING like console games. Any gamer willing to drop $1,000 on a graphics card is nothing like a gamer who complains about a $500 console being over priced.
We live for gaming with everything turned up on three screens @ no less than 60)

Not only the retailer profit end, the console 'vendors/pimps' are also willing to sell at a loss in exchange for game profit. Like ol' school drug dealers, first few bags are free.
intel on the otherhand works the other end of the market .. demand is high, so inflate the price while dribbling out the supply.c.
