Peter Judd wanted
very much to be a soldier when he was a child. So he joined the army when he
was eighteen, and for several months he was taught how to be a good soldier. He
did quite well in everything except shooting. One day he and his friends were
practicing their shooting, and all of them were doing quite well except Peter.
After he had shot at the target&(靶子)&nine times and hadn’t
hit it once, the officer who was trying to teach the young soldiers to shoot
said, “You are quite hopeless, Peter. Don’t waste your last bullet&(子弹)! Go behind that wall
and shoot yourself with it!”
Peter felt ashamed&(羞愧的). He went behind the
wall and a few seconds later, the of-ficer and the other young soldiers heard
the sound of a shot.
“Oh, dear!” the
officer said. “Has that silly man really shot himself?” He ran behind the wall
as quickly as he could, but Peter was all right. “I’m sorry, sir,” he said,

We sometimes say the lion is “the
king of the jungle ()” because it is stronger and more dangerous
than the other animals. It can run faster than most other animals and it can
the best. The lion is at the top of the food chain on land. In the sea, the
shark is at the top of the food chain. It can swim faster than most other sea
animals. It can also use its big teeth to catch other sea animals and eat them.
What is at the top of the world’s
food chain? People are! We are not the biggest or fastest, but we are the
cleverest. We could not run faster than most animals, so we invented cars and
now we can move the fastest. We could not fight better than a lion, so we
invented guns. Now we can hunt the best.
Human inventions can help us a lot,
but they can be dangerous, too. For example, many years ago in
Inner Mongolia, people used guns to kill a lot of wild
wolves. The wild wolves usually eat wild rabbits. The number of wild rabbits was
becoming bigger and bigger as the number of wild wolves was getting smaller and
smaller. The wild rabbits competed () for the grass with the sheep and
cows. Much of the grassland became desert because it was seriously destroyed () by the rabbits.
Remember that we are a part of the
food chain, so we are in danger, too! When we are protecting animals, we are also
protecting ourselves.
(& ) 6. &How many kinds of food chains are mentioned in this passage?
&&&&&&&&&&A.
Two.&&&&&&&&&& B. Three.&&&&&&& C. Four.&&&&&&&& D. None.
(& ) 7. &Why are people at the top of the
world’s food chain?
&&&&&&&&&&A.
Because they can use guns.&&&&&&&&&&& &&&&&&&&&&B. Because they are the biggest.
&&&&&&&&&&C.
Because they are the cleverest.&&&& &&&&&& &&&&& D. Because they can drive cars.
(& ) 8. &Which order of the pictures best
describes the third paragraph?
&&&&&&&&&&&
&&&&&&&&&&A.
b, d, a, c, e&&&&&&&&& &&&&&&&&& &&&&&&&&&&& &&&&&&&&&&&&&B. b, d, f, c, e
&&&&&&&&&&C.
b, f, a, e, c&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& &&&&&&&& &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& D. b, e, d, c, a
(& ) 9. &In what way do we say human
inventions can be dangerous sometimes?
&&&&&&&&&&A.
They can kill a lot of wild wolves.
&&&&&&&&&&B.
They can destroy the food chain.
&&&&&&&&&&C.
They can destroy the grassland.
&&&&&&&&&&D.
They can make wild rabbits grow bigger and bigger.
(& ) 10. What is the best title of
the passage?
&&&&&&&&&&&A.
People’s inventions.&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& &&&&B.
Lions and sharks.
&&&&&&&&&&&C.
Food chain.&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& &&& &&&& D. Desert.
What will man be like in the
future — in 5,000 or even 50,000
years from now? We can only make a guess, of course, but we can be sure that he
will be different from what he is today. For man is slowly changing all the
Let us take an example. Man, even 500
years ago, was shorter than he is today. Now, on the average, man is about
three inches taller. Five hundred years is a relatively () short period of time, so we may
suppose that man will continue to grow taller.
Again, in the modern world we use
our brains a great deal. Even so, we still make use of only about 20% of the
brain’s capacity (). As time goes on, however, we shall have to
use our brains more and more and finally we shall need larger ones! This is
likely to bring about a physical change too. The head, especially the forehead,
will grow larger.
Nowadays our eyes are being used
too much. In fact, we use them so much that very often they become weaker and
we have to wear glasses. But over a very long period of time it is likely that
man’s eyes will grow stronger.
On the other hand, we tend&() to make less use of our arms and
legs. These, as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however,
our fingers will grow more sensitive () because they are used a great
deal in modern life.
But what about
hair? This
will probably disappear from the body altogether in the course of time because
it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then, both men
and women are probably to be hairless!
Perhaps, all this gives the
impression that future man will not be a very attractive () person to look at! This may be
true. All the same, besides these changes, future man will still have a lot in
common with us. He will still be a human being, with thoughts and feelings similar
to our own.
(& ) 11. Future man is probably to be different
from us in ________ ways.
&&&&&&&&&&&A. two &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& B.
three&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& C.
four&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& D.
(& ) 12. Future man’s head will grow larger
because ________.
&&&&&&&&&&&A.
he will use his brain more and more as time goes on
&&&&&&&&&&&B.
he makes use only 80% of the brain’s capacity
&&&&&&&&&&&C.
the other 80% of his brain will grow faster
&&&&&&&&&&&D.
his brain has grown larger over the past centuries
(& ) 13. What will be true about future man?
&&&&&&&&&&&A.
He will have smaller eyes and will wear better glasses.
&&&&&&&&&&&B.
His fingers will grow weaker because he won’t use them.
&&&&&&&&&&&C.
He will be hairless because hair is no longer useful.
&&&&&&&&&&&D.
He will think and feel in a different way.
(& ) 14. What does the writer write the
article for?
&&&&&&&&&&&A.
To give us some knowledge of future man.
&&&&&&&&&&&B.
To show that man’s life will be different in the future.
&&&&&&&&&&&C.
To let us know future man will become less attractive.
&&&&&&&&&&&D.
To tell us future man is growing taller as time passes.
My most memorable and best
experiences will stay in my mind for many years to come. For most people,
horses are just animals that should only be used for racing, for money. Ever
since I was only a few years old, horses have been my passion (). My dream was to ride a horse. When
that time finally came, my heart beat a thousand times a minute.
It was a warm summer day in
and we were at a park. My mom was buying several things for home while I looked
around to find something that made my eyes twinkle (shine). I saw a figure from
a four-legged beautiful animal was standing down the block, breathing
heavily. I ran up to the horse, not even knowing how to pet it, just excited to
see the most beautiful animal. He was shining white, with a well-brushed tail.
Right away I thought that I could
ride this horse. I turned the other way and went to search for my mom to get
some money. I saw her buying groceries and led her to where the horse was. The
owner was back and said that it was his horse and I couldn’t ride it. A warm
stream of tears& () flooded down my cheeks as my mom
tried to ask the man to let me ride the horse. He finally agreed for a high
price. He taught me how to get on the horse and explained to me that it was important
to keep heels down and arms steady. The beat of the horse’s
awakened all the senses in me and I thought I was the happiest little girl in Ukraine
at that time. I began planning how I was going to buy a horse after I became a
millionaire. Before I knew it, the ride was over. Surprisingly, I actually
learned to control the horse.
That day was probably the happiest
time of my life. Most children wouldn’t have as much fun as I did. Several
years later, after coming to

Today more

children improve their study at school. But, many of their children use
computers to play games, to watch videos, instead of studying. We often see
that computer game houses are crowded with people, especially young boys. They
spend a lot of money competing with the computerized machines. The more they
lose, the more they want to win. The result is that they don’t want to work or
