三、阅读理解 (共15小题, 每小题2分 计30分)。
Number One is a sign with the number thirty on it. When drivers see this
sign, they must not go at more than thirty kilometers an hour. We see this
sign when we are getting near a town.
Number Two is a sign that we’re near a crossing. We must drive carefully.
Number Three is a sign that there is a bend (拐弯) in the road. Again, we
must drive slowly and carefully. It is not safe to go around a bend very fast.
Number Four is a sign that there is another road coming in from the right. There is a junction (交叉) at this place.
Number Five is a sign that there is a hill and Number Six is a sign that
the road gets narrow. Drivers must go slowly and carefully.
Number Seven has the word “SCHOOL” on it. This is a sign that there is
a school at the side of the street or the road. Perhaps there are children
going to or leaving school. So drivers must look carefully and go slowly.
Number Eight is a sign with the letter “P” on it. The letter “P”
means “Parking”. At some places, there are the signs “No parking” or “No waiting”. If a driver leaves his car near one of these signs, a policeman
may come and write down the number of his car.
31. At the places where you see Sign 1, ____________..

Steven Cleaver, the Executive Director (执行理事) of Horizons for Youth,
has some outdoor activity ideas for families. The activities will drive
families’ sadness away. We asked Steven to share some outdoor activities
that families could do together. Here’s what he told us:
Going on a hike is a great way to go outdoors and get some
exercise. State parks can offer free roads to hike along and many places to explore (探索).
Gardening: Gardening is a wonderful family activity. The whole family can
get together. When it’s winter, you might just start with a family plan for the garden. The garden is a good place where parents can teach their children teamwork. Give tasks to each family member. Who plants? Who waters?
Going to a nature center:In State Audubon Societies there are usually
smaller nature centers that offer family activities. Naturalists(自然科学家) are ready to answer kids’ questions, so parents don’t need to worry about teaching the subject matter themselves.
Cleaning up: Taking part in nature clean — volunteering to clean the
road teaches kids that they have the ability (能力) to do something for the environment and neighborhood. When parents join in this activity, they can
set a good example for their children, which helps children realize their
responsibility (责任) to protect the environment.
Fruit picking: These are great season outdoor activities. Children get to
see how fruit grows and everyone gets to enjoy the fruit from their work.

can offer free roads to hike along.

B. state parks
C. nature centers
D. quiet cities

is a good place for parents to teach their children teamwork.

“He has no friends at all?” asks Holmes.
“No. He talks to no one except the gypsies(吉普赛人). They are poor
people who travel from place to place. A band of gypsies is staying on our

Animals do many different, amazing things to
get through the winter. Some of them migrate.
They travel to other places where the weather is
warmer or where they can find food.
Many birds migrate in autumn. Because the trip
can be dangerous, some travel in large groups.
For example, geese(鹅) fly in noisy, “V”-shaped groups. Other kinds of
birds fly alone.
Some animals stay active in winter. They must change themselves as the
weather changes. Many change their doing or their bodies. For example,
snowshoe rabbits grow white fur to help them hide in the snow.
Food is hard to find in winter. Some animals, like mice, collect lots of
food in autumn and store it to eat later. Some animals eat different kinds of food as the seasons change.
Some animals hibernate(冬眠) for part or all of the winter. This is a
special, very deep sleep. The animal’s body temperature drops, and its
heartbeat and breathing slow down. It uses very little energy. In autumn,
these animals get ready for winter by eating much more food than in summer
and storing it as body fat. They use this fat to keep them alive while
hibernating.
Water makes good protection for many animals. When the weather gets cold,
they move to the bottom of lakes and rivers. There, frogs and many fish hide under rocks or fallen leaves. Cold water holds more oxygen than warm water, and frogs can breathe through their skin.
Every type of insect has its own life cycle and that is the way it grows
and changes. Different insects spend the winter in different forms of their lives. Some insects also spend the winter without moving. Some insects spend the winter as pupae(蛹). Other insects die after laying eggs in autumn. The eggs change into new insects in spring and everything begins all over again.
41. What does the underlined word “migrate” in the first paragraph most
probably mean ?
A. move from one place to another
B. sleep in the winter
C. disappear
D. look for food
42. Why do many birds fly in large groups?
A. They can easily find food this way.
B. There may be danger during
C. They can get warm at night.
D. They will use little
43. Snowshoe rabbits spend the cold winter by __________.
A. breathing through their skin
B. eating a lot of
C. sleeping for the whole winter
D. growing white thicker fur
44. The main purpose of the examples in the last paragraph is to tell us
A. most insects die when winter comes
B. different insects grow and change in their own ways
C. most insects spend the winter without moving
D. different insects grow and change in the same ways
45. What is the passage mainly about?
A. How living things grow and change in the winter.
B. How living things spend the winter.
C. How living things get food in the winter.
D. How living things travel in the winter.

The home of the future won’t be completely different and we will be living in houses and flats as we do today. But people will want to shape their homes to match their dreams. No two homes will be the same. People will be able to buy “house materials” containing (包含) moveable walls, doors and windows. They will put together the different parts to create the home they want. Many jobs that we do today will disappear, others will still be done but will change and new jobs will be created. Skilled workers such as builders, gardeners and electricians won’t disappear because machines can’t take the place of them. We will still have teachers because students need human
contact. But they will be using modern technology in class more and students will be working more from home.
Space holidays will develop in the future, but these holidays won’t be for everyone because they won’t be cheap. Short space trips will develop first, then hotels will move around the earth where it will be possible to have a longer vacation. By the end of the next century, there will be holiday
centers on the moon with things needed for families.
There will be no paper in the future. Instead, there will be e-paper
which people will be able to use over and over again. This will develop in order to protect nature. E-newspapers and e-magazines will take the place of traditional newspapers and magazines and we will download information and news articles from the Internet every day onto our re-useable paper.
As we know, the earth is going to disappear sometime in the future. This isn’t going to happen tomorrow but scientists say that it will happen in five billion years. We will have to find another home. At sometime in the
future far away, either we stay on the earth and die with it, or we leave and
